the campers were given a small questionaire before we arrived, i am matched with a leader who has similar interests, and perosnalities as me. i stand with my duffle bags filled with clothes, people are buzzing and laughing and girls are laughing and i simply stand there. i explore. "hi." a girl says to me. she seems outgoing and nice. i nod, and begin to pull out my notepad. she must think i don't want to talk to her. she walks away.
the leaders post match ups and dorms on the notice board. i search for my name. and drop off my bags at the cabin. i make my way to the mess hall where we will eat a late dinner and meet our leaders. i eat dinner with a group of girls who just joined me. i don't try to join there conversation.
now it is time for the teens to meet their leaders. i clear my plate and look around, i begin to get a little nervous. i get nervous sometimes and when i do i get this urge to scream. more like a mental scream. soon many people have left with their new leaders/councilors. i stand in the quickly empty cafeteria. there are countless people left. soon my leader finds me. he greets me "hi." he says smiling. he has a notepad and pencil. he seems my age maybe a year older. he then does sign language, saying follow me. i follow and soon he are standing in a small field, he takes and seat and i do the same.
"laney, welcome to camp alright." he says breathing in the sweet summer air. "i am dylan, and it is going to be a great summer." he says giving a sweet smile. he seems nice. he has brown hair styled decently, snd blue eyes.
after about half an hour just admiring the lake and the night, he offers to walk me to my cabin. he doesn't say much. he opens the door for me, and tells me to have a good night until the midnight bonfire. i think i might just have one. that small act of kindess is already changing my perspective of this camp.
