~SHANE’S POV~

“Hey, Shane. What’s up?” Jared greets me as I walk into our room. I take my bags and throw them in the closet and plop on my bed.

“Leave me alone. Just let me die here in silence.” I groan out, throwing a pillow over my face.

 “Why? What’s going on?”

“I think I’m going to break up with Joey.”

“What? Why? Did something happen between you two?”

“No. That’s the thing: nothing happens. We’ve just lost our spark. We used to have so much chemistry and now it’s all gone. I can see it in his eyes. He doesn’t love me. Well at least not the way he used to.”

“Shane, I seriously think you should take a minute to rationalize all of this before you make a huge decision. If you realize that this was a mistake a little way down the road, there is a chance you won’t get him back.”

“Ugh. Whatever. I’mma go talk to dad about this.”

 “Dad?”

“I-I mean mom.” I stutter before hopping off the bed and exiting the room.

How the hell am I supposed to get to the spirit world?

Dammit. I’m going to have to talk to either Lux or Tenebris.

…I’m talking to Lux. She’s nice and sweet unlike Tenebris and she’s my spirit mom anyways so she’ll be happy to see me.

 ~

“Why the f*ck did you call me when it’s almost midnight?” Lux asks, with her arms crossed. Well I guess she’s not as happy as I thought she would to see me.

 “Midnight? It’s noon!”

“The spirit world time works a little different. If it’s nine in the afternoon in the living world, it’s nine in the morning in the spirit world.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know. This is really important to me though. Can upi please just give me a quick lift?”

“Ugh. Alright.” She sighs, rubbing her exhausted face. “Hop in the car.”

We exit my house and walk down to the drive way where her car awaits. I open the back door to ride in the back passenger seat, but there’s two occupied car seats taking up the whole back seat.

“Um, yeah. You’re gonna have to sit up here with me.”

 “You brought the kids along?”

“Do you seriously think I’m going to leave two infants in a giant old ass Victorian house by themselves surrounded by a town full of dead people? Boy, you’ve got me twisted. Get your ass up here.” Wow. She’s cranky when she’s sleepy.

 “Can you take me to—?”

“I already know exactly where you want to go. Just buckle up and sit tight.”

 ~

“This is his house?” I ask Lux as we pull up to the location, still sitting in the passenger seat.

 “Apparently so.”

“But this house is so tiny. All these houses look crappy. Why doesn’t it look like the houses in your neighborhood?”

“In the spirit world, the quality of your house depends on the deeds you’ve done in the living world. If you were a good person and donated to charity and served for your community to make the world a better place, you could have a really nice house. If you did nothing and just lived your life doing nothing good or nothing bad, you will be homeless here, living off of scraps of food and using  old newspapers to bare through the cold nights.”

“What if you were a horrible person and did a lot of bad things?”

“Oh you do not want to know what happen to those people. That is beyond your imagination and could probably scar you if I told you. Your father is lucky he tried to clean up his act when he found out he was dying and did a lot of last minute good deeds. He changed dramatically in the last few months of his life and that was just enough to earn him this house.”

 Knockity-knock-knock

I lightly tap my fist on the door, hoping that Lux dropped me off at the right house.

“Shane? What are you doing here?” he asks, rubbing his eyes.

“Can we talk? I have something that I really need to get off my chest.”

“But I’m dead. How are you here? Are you dead too?”

“No, dad.” I sigh. “Just let me in and I’ll explain everything.”

“Of course. Come in.” he steps to the side to let me into the house before leading me into the living room. We both sit down on the couch silently waiting for the other to speak up. “Are you okay, Shane?” he asks me, staring at my trembling bottom lip.

“No, dad. I’m not okay.” I say, shaking my head as one tear breaks the barrier of my eye and slides down my cheek. “I have to break up with Joey.”

 “What? Why?”

“Because he doesn’t love me anymore,”

 “How do you know that?”

“Because he loves Sawyer now. He looks at Sawyer the way he used to look at me. Every time there’s a problem he’s dealing with or something he needs to get off of his chest, he goes to Sawyer for comfort instead of me. He even tried to have sex with him in the janitor’s closet once! I don’t know what changed between us. Maybe I’m just not worth it. Maybe we’re not worth it. Maybe our future isn’t worth it.”

“Shane you have to understand this: just because you have a past with someone, that doesn’t mean they belong in your future."

"So you think I should break up with Joey?"

"I'm not saying that. I'm saying take some time before you decide. Make sure this is what you really want to do before you realize you might regret it. Now go back home and get some rest because your mother probably misses you."

"Okay, dad. I'll come back after school tomorrow."

"Sounds like a good plan. Goodbye, Shane."

"Goodbye, dad." I quickly wave to him before walking outside onto the front porch.

Now how the hell am I supposed to get home?

Oh fuckery. Gotta call Lux again...
