LWSADW: Hey there, squirrel buddy!

I walked around the park that was near our motel. I felt cool breeze on my skin. Though, it didn’t exactly help clearing my mind. The conversation between Dean and me was constantly repeating itself in my mind. I felt guilty for my outburst of anger. It’s not like I wanted to react like that, I just…I guess I was shaken by the mention of my birthday. I never understood why my mother didn’t want for anyone to know when was my birthday.

Anyway, I was sure Dean didn’t mean anything bad when he asked me. I ran my hand through my hair and sighed, which made my thoughts scatter.

I looked around the park. It was big, full of big trees. Their leaves gently waved in the breeze. There were many people around: parents with their children, senior citizens, business people who were hurriedly passing through the park on their way to their jobs, couples kissing on the benches…

That last one made me shiver in disgust, sticking my tongue with a facial expression I assumed looked like I just ate a lemon. I rolled my eyes. I wasn’t exactly a fan of people, I liked more some quiet atmosphere, with a book and a nice mug of warm chocolate. Yeah, I know, I could just wish. 

I wasn’t in the mood to socialize with people and decided to go to a deserted part of the park when I saw some tall man holding a map, with a big backpack on his back approaching. Ugh, tourists, I hate them. Like I said, I went to the other part of park, smirking at the sign that said that the entrance there was forbidden. I laughed a little when I read that it was forbidden because there was some kind of animals that were on a verge of extinct. God, people were so stupid for obeying those rules. But then again what are you?, a voice in my head said.

“Shut up, no one wanted your opinion”, I murmured under my breath, rolling my eyes in annoyance. However, I thought over what my inner voice said. It was right, what was I? From the outside I looked normal, but I had those weird powers I couldn’t control. They could appear right here and right now and I wouldn’t know what to do.

You are a monster Hayley, my inner voice spoke again.

I didn’t try to answer it, I just clenched my teeth, tears filling my eyes. My hands formed into fists, which were so tightly pressed that my knuckles went white. Maybe it was right. I am a monster.

No you’re not, I heard a male voice say.

What? That wasn’t supposed to happen. But it was so familiar. I thought about whom could it belong to. The only one I knew that could read my mind was…Nate. I rolled my eyes as I groaned. Seriously? Is this how you’re going to talk to me now?

Yep, he said, giving the ‘p’ pretty nice pop. He was not supposed to hear that. It’s awesome, isn’t it? And I can make you talk to me in your mind. Oooh, now it makes sense.

That is so not cool dude. You can get in my mind whenever you want?

Nah, only when you’re feeling down, and you’re sad. Or confused, a damsel in distress. Like now.

I rolled my eyes. Alright, I’ll be fine, now…get out of my head! Can’t you just wait ‘till we meet in person?

Ugh, fine, you don’t have to yell… I heard his voice becoming distant, like he was going away.

“Now, where was I?”, I asked myself. I felt pain in my stomach. As I put my hand on it, I realized I was hungry. I looked around. There were, of course, trees, and, well, a squirrel holding a hazelnut. Seeing there’s no other choice I decided to…

“Hey, there little one”, I said to a squirrel. It lifted its head up from hazelnut. It looked at me with those big brown eyes. “Aw, you’re so cute. So, because you’re cute, I’m in a temptation to eat you. And seeing there’s no other food around except that hazelnut you’re holding, which I suppose you will not be willing to take over without a fight, I might use a force”, I said, leaning to the squirrel and putting my hands on my knees. The squirrel just stared at me. And now you’re talking to a squirrel, my inner voice spoke again. I chose ignore it. I narrowed my eyes when I realized that the squirrel won’t answer me.
