Brace face and the apocalypse: the search for an orthodontist

Chapter 1: prolouge

It was the year 2007 in sunny Australia and Edith was seventeen and living with her mom and dad in a big house with her little brother Joesph. Edith was troublesome and had constant mood swings and stressed out her parents a lot, she wouldn't do what they said because after all she did live under her parents rule and she had to obey them.

Edith didn't take much care of her teeth and only brushed once or twice a week when her parents forced her to, she had a full set and they were all there but the colour of her teeth were a slimy green colour  reminiscent of mold.

Edith's mom Blanche always  ridiculed and  told Edith thats why she didn't have any friends at school because her breathe stunk to high heaven.

Blanche decided she was going to book an appointment at the dentist and Edith reached for her moms arm and told her not to call them, she stated she will promise to brush her teeth but her mom wasn't having it and dialled the number to the dentists office anyway.

She put the number in and Doctor John Bonher the owner and highly trained dentist picked up and replied, Blanche explained to doctor John that she'd like an appointment for Edith because her teeth were so bad and green colour she thought doctor John must have a look at them.

Edith was in the background while Blanche was on the phone with tears running down her face of embarrassment.

Doctor John told Blanche to come in as soon as possible because nobody was in the dentists office and it was a quiet time so John had time to look at Edith's teeth.

Blanche thanked doctor John and hung up the phone and slightly pushed her  forward and told   Edith to get in the car.

Edith shook her head and refused to go because she was scared she'd never been to the dentist before.

Edith tried to run inside but Blanche chased after her, as Edith ran into the living room passed the sofa towards the french doors to go outside in the back garden Blanche caught up to Edith and picked her up and walked to the car.

While being carried to the car she kicked and screamed and tried to struggle but there was no point and no escape she had to go now.

Blanche opened the car door and threw Edith inside and shut the door, Edith tried to open the door again but Blanche took out her keys and pressed a button so the car door would lock there was no escape for her.

Blanche got in the drivers seat and put her keys in the ignition and started to drive.

The journey there was only ten minutes away and the building was two buildings surrounded by a green gate.

They saw the parking lot was empty with hardly anybody there only one or two people so they picked a space and parked in the parking lot.

They got out the car and walked  to the building and inside the automatic doors, inside Edith saw the clean white floors and the ocean blue walls and she took in the smell of dental equipment as  she walked in.

They walked towards the reception desk and there sat a blond woman in the booth and Blanche told her that her daughter has an appointment with Doctor John, the receptionist told the two to just wait over in the waiting area and he'll see them in a minute.

Edith and Blanche walked to the waiting area and sat down on the front row and Blanche picked up a magazine and started to read while she waited.

Edith and Blanche watched as a bald man in a green jacket come out of one of the rooms and he had cotton stuffed in his mouth.

Edith tapped her foot as she waited.

Five minutes later a doctor with Slicked back black hair and a white doctors coat walked to the waiting room and called for Edith.

They got up and walked to the room and as they walked John introduced himself to Edith and told her he heard she had abit of a problem and laughed jokingly.

Edith's face went red in embarrassment  and they finally got to the room, in the middle of the room was a big chair, she looked at it like it was a medieval torture device and her eyes went big  and the Doctor pointed to the chair and asked her to sit on it.

She approached the chair and sat on it and John pressed a button with a tiny remote in his hands and moved the chair downwards to Edith was laying down.

John told Edith to open her mouth and she did, once she did a foul smell erupted out of her mouth, John winced and his eyes watered at the foul stench, he turned around and got a mask from the table and put it around his face, that was better and he grabbed a tool from the tray on the table and looked into her mouth.

He poked and prodded all the teeth and they were all there and all in the right order he just told Blanche that they were crooked and they needed straightening and that she'll need braces and he'll have to put them on now.

Edith's eyes widened in fear but John ensured her that everything will be ok.

John got the braces from the tray and layered them on her teeth and got a tool from his tray to screw them on tight.

Edith had her mouth wide open and mumbled her words, John finished screwing the braces on and he was done, he got a mirror up to Edith's face and Edith smiled and saw how horrific her smile was with the braces on she thought she looked ugly but this is what you get for not listening.

John told Blanche that Edith will only be allowed soft foods  and liquids to make it easier for her and to come back in 24 months to take them off and see if they are straightened again.

Blanche thanked the doctor and Edith thought 24 months was a long time but she'll have to put up with it this was her punishment and she had to deal with it, on second thought it wasn't  that long.

Blanche and Edith walked back to the car and drove home and they pulled out of the car park and drove out of the gate and into the road back home.

As they arrived home the car pulled into the driveway and Edith's brother was skateboarding outside in the front  garden up and down the pavement waiting for them both to get back.

Blanche explained to the brother that his sister has braces now and as Edith walked passed she smiled and he saw her braces and he thought they were neat.

He picked up his skateboard and  went inside and followed Edith and called her Brace face, she turned round and flaunted her tongue at him blowing a raspberry, she didn't like the nickname but this will be what she will be called for the amount of time she has to have them on.
