You were curled up in bed, crying. It had been three years since you'd talked to him, and it still hurt when you had a bad day like today.

You knew why he'd broken up with you. It wasn't your fault. You agreed with him that a long distance relationship would be stressful and difficult with the time difference and his other responsibilities.

So why did it still hurt so much sometimes?

You knew that too. It was because of the promise you'd made to each other. The promise to find each other again. The promise made impossible when your phone went missing at the airport.

You sat up slowly, wiping your eyes, and glanced over to your desk. On it sat two knee pads, one black, one white.

The white one was yours. The black one belonged to him.

It was something you'd been doing since the two of you were in elementary school. You always wore different-colored kneepads, so you could easily find each other in a game.

You picked up the black one and held it. It was the only thing you had left, aside from one picture you'd printed out.

It was a picture of you and Toru, on the last day of middle school. You were leaning against each other, both holding a volleyball.

"I miss you Toru," you whispered to the darkness. "I miss you so much."

The next day was your birthday. You were 18. Officially an adult.

You got dressed, partially excited. At the same time, you and Toru had always talked about what you would do on your 18th birthday, so a small bit of sadness lingered.

Slowly, you walk down the stairs, where your parents were waiting.

"Happy birthday!" your mom says, smiling. "You're finally an adult!"

You nod.

"Yeah, I am."

She notices your look and gives you a smile.

"I was going to wait for your dad, but you look like you need it."

You raise an eyebrow and she hands you a small box.

"Happy birthday sweetheart. Your father and I have been planning this for a long time."

You open the box, confused, and saw slip of paper.

"A plane ticket? Why would you-"

You freeze, and your eyes widen. You glance at your mom.

"We know you miss Japan," she says. "So, we've been saving our money, and we bought a small house in your name. That ticket will fly you in, and your cousin is going to pick you up at the airport. We've already enrolled you in the same high school as him, and you'll be finishing out high school there."

Your face lights up. You'll be going home. You might get to see Toru again.

You hug your mom tightly.

"Mom thank you! Thank you so much!"

She laughs.

"Go get packed, your flight leaves at ten."

"In the morning?!"

"No, at night. You'll get to Japan around six in the morning."

Stepping off the flight, you look around. Your cousin should be here, but it's been three years since you've seen him.

"Y/N," A voice said behind you.
