Brace face and the apocalypse: the search for an orthodontist

Chapter 2: the outbreak

Edith got home and ran upstairs to the bathroom and closed the door and looked in the mirror and smiled, she didn't like how ugly the braces made her smile.

She ran out the bathroom and too her bedroom and shut the door and lay on her bed to think.

In the living room the family was watching a news report on the news and the reporter explained they'd been a biological accident in a military lab in America and a deadly virus they were experimenting on got loose in the air and could spread world wide.

The reporter warned the viewers to stay in doors just incase it travels to Australia, Blanche and her dad Martin who wore a white vest and was ill with a nasal Cannula around his nose  looked at the tv and thought it wouldn't come to Australia because they live in the most hygienic place, Blanche stood up and told Edith's brother Sam not to worry.

It was late and Blanche decided it was time for the family to go to bed, they all got upstairs except for Martin because he couldn't move and was ill so he stayed on the sofa and slept while Blanche and Sam went upstairs ready to go to sleep.

The night flew by and morning was about to break, John was opening up his dentists office and flew up the shutters to show it was open for the day, John was arranging the persripton medicine on the shelf and turned around and saw a scruffy looking man in a green jacket and limping towards the desk.

As he was moving closer and closer towards the desk John could see the man's pupils had gone and it was just the white of his eyes, he saw he was holding a bloody wound on his stomach and he was dragging his leg moaning in pain for help.

The man fell on the floor by the desk with a loud thump and John ran over and shook him asking if he was ok and what help the man needed but he wasn't responding.

There was a moment of silence as John held the man's body in his arms and he put his head on his chest and fell no heart beat the man was dead.

John looked into the whites of the mans eyes and suddenly the man sprouted up making monstrous gurgling sounds it was like nothing he had ever heard before.

The man put his arms around John and his head close as he  tool a bite out of  John's neck and it tore off like when you eat a turkey dinner at thanks giving, there was a bloody patch on John's neck and he held it with his arm and he screamed in pain and kicked the infected man in the face, the man rolled over on his back so he couldn't get up John saw the infected man  trying to grab the air as if to try and find something so he could get up but he couldn't, John saw an opportunity  to escape and crawled to the  medicine shelf to get something to try and disinfect the bite.

Then John sat on the floor leaning on the desk and he looked in the reflection of the shiny desk at himself and saw he looked pale, suddenly a shower of green icky vomit came out his mouth onto the floor making a foul mess.

John held his stomach and his eyes closed he felt like his brain was shutting down and felt like he was going to die, as as his eyes shut his life flashed before his eyes and he felt peace for a moment.

Suddenly John lost his pupil and only the white irs remained and he sprouted up and made the same gurgling sounds as the man, it was too late John was now one of them.

Soon more people got infected and living dead rose up and gathered in every business around town rendering every place of work useless and more and more got infected and got brought back to life it was truly a horrible sight.

There was nobody in the city except for the infected they'd taken over and it was now their town.

On the outskirts of Melbourne were people were relatively safe away from harm  Edith and Blanche were in bed sleeping and Martin was downstairs with his cannula in so that he could breathe  and an IV drip in his arm he had that in because he had a terminal disease that rendered him useless of all movement  and was dying.

Martin woke up from his slumber and felt hungry and was craving some peanut butter out of the jar, he got out of his chair and flopped in his wheelchair and placed the IV in the arm of the chair and rolled to the kitchen and saw the peanut butter on the counter and he reached out for it and took it and opened the jar and placed a spoon in it, he was ready to eat.

As Martin turned around he heard monstrous gurgling sounds coming towards the door and heard the door swing open hitting the wall and somebody come in.

Martin saw the infected coming towards him and he tried his best to wheel away from the infected person just then Blanche came down the stairs and saw the infected person but thought it was a druggie at first and yelled to get out of the house but the person wasn't responding only with gurgling noises.

Blanche saw the person come close to Martin's neck and bit him and tore though his neck like stringy cheese, Blanches eyes widened as blood splattered on the floor she saw Martins eyes go white and  he jumped back to life and started walking towards the other infected guy and continued to feast on his neck as Blanche looked to the knife on the kitchen counter the head of the infected guy was still moving she knew she had to stab them even though she didn't want to.

She grabbed the knife and ran to the green coat guy and stabbed him in the top of the head, the man's head fell off his neck and bounced on the floor.

Martin got up towards Blanche and put his arms around her and she tried to stab Martin in the face but missed, Martin brought Blanche closer and bit her neck like it was a strip of chewing gum and she screamed so loud in pain and suddenly  her pupil turned to white colour and she sprouted up making gurgling sounds and started to walk round the kitchen with Martin.

Edith got up from her bed and went in her brothers room and pushed him to wake him up because she thought mom was in pain because they could hear her screaming.

Sam got up and went downstairs with Edith and Edith asked her mom if she was ok, infected Blanche heard her speak and looked towards her, her jaw unhinged and she was limping, the brother took a step and asked the mom what was wrong but there was no reply.

A tear came from Sam's eye and  he  couldn't take it anymore to see his parents unresponsive it was a terrific emotional moment for  Sam he looked towards the french doors and ran to them and opened them and ran out into the back garden, climbed over the fence and Edith watched as her brother ran into the forrest.

Edith was left by herself and she knew what she had to do, she took out a slingshot from her back pocket she was playing with in her room and chucking coins at the wall, she knew from all the video games she played what must be done.

She loaded a coin into the sling and aimed for her infected mom's head and pulled the sling back hard then let go, the coin flung edge side up and jammed in Blanches brain leaving brain exposed, blood splattered on infect Blanches head and she fell to the floor with a loud thump.

Edith got another coin and loaded it in and pulled the band back hard and let go, the coin landed edge side and jammed in his brain and he plopped to the floor.

Edith ran to the french doors as she heard more infected gathering outside and climbed up the ladder to her treehouse and went there to hide away from the infected.

She locked the door and sat down with her back against the wood she played target practice with the coins and slingshot at the wooded wall and had a bouncy ball in her pocket to keep her busy, she also had snacks she had stolen from the kitchen earlier before  hidden in her pockets so that was enough for her to survive.

She was safe for now
