•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••I shoved the fork into my mouth and chomped unhappily on my food. I can't believe that I'm moving to Alaska. My stepmother tried to calm me down, but I couldn't help but feel betrayed. She told me that we're moving just for the sake of a "new change in scenery." Stabbing more food onto my fork, I shoved the rest of my dinner down my throat, and jumped up from the table.
"Sweetie, it's for the better! We've been cooped up in this small town for years now," my stepmom said, standing up as well. I stared silently at her and didn't say a word.
"Come on, Ashley. Your dad would've loved it!"
My heart twisted at the mention of my father.
"Don't talk about him," I snapped. My stepmother acted like she cared about him, but I knew how she truly felt about his death.
"Ashley-" but I already sped up the stairs to my room. I flopped on my bed and held back hot tears. How could she just be so happy and then mention dad? I looked around at my sky blue walls and felt a bit more calm. When I was five, my dad and I browsed through all the different paint colors, and we both easily decided on a sky blue.
"Daddy, I like this one!" Little me giggled and pointed at a blue swatch.
"Okay, pumpkin," my dad laughed and kissed my head. Little me hugged his legs and then my memory faded.
Now, twelve years later he's gone. There was a knock on my door and I rolled my eyes. Couldn't my step mother just see I wanted to be left alone?!
"Ash, open the door, please," my stepmom said in an exasperated tone.
"Why should I even talk to you?" I questioned her, my eyes glared at the wooden door.
"I'm your mother, and I want to talk," she said, pounding the door. I slowly climbed off of my bed and opened my bedroom door to be met with my stepmom's smirk. There were dark circles under her eyes, and her hair was practically a bird's nest. I was a little put off at first by her appearance at dinner, but after she shared the news with me I dismissed it quickly.
"What do you want?" I said with venom in my voice.
"I want you to know something," she said menacingly her face moved closer to mine. I moved back, surprised by her sudden change in attitude.
"Your father is dead and gone sweetie, so you will obey and respect me in my house. Do you understand!" My stepmom's hand gripped my wrists. My eyes grew wide in fear, and I snatched my wrist out of her gnarly fingers. Regaining my composure, my mouth formed into a snarl as I spat out a comeback.
"This house is not your house. It's my dad's house, you selfish bitch!" I smirked as her face contorted into a lookalike of an angry hag. Quickly slamming the door into my stepmother's shocked face, I grabbed a backpack from under my bed. The bag was put under there for emergencies in case my "mom" got out of control. These past few days had been horrible. My stepmother was verbally abusive and hurtful to me in unspeakable ways. Not anymore. I was sick and tired of her bullshit.
