You wanted to scream. You wanted to throw up. You wanted to cry and sob and curl up and die. It took all your energy and then some not to flinch or whimper any time a gunshot sounded. It took all your willpower to not squeeze your eyes shut so you didn't have to look at the dead body of your best friend. A small part of you wished you had been hit instead of them. They wouldn't have been dead. They would've lived. They would've gotten to go back to their kind and loving family, one that wasn't broken when they weren't around.

"How fuckin' easy was that? They all just sat there like they wanted to die."

"You say that like it's a bad thing. Now let's go. It won't be long before the school calls the cops."

"Hold on."

Another gunshot blasted through the room. It was so loud. You wanted to slam your hands over your ears.

"Let's just fuckin' go."

"Alright! Alright!"

You heard footsteps leaving the room. Instead of getting up or trying to run, you just lay there. You couldn't find the will to move. All you could do was just close your eyes and start to cry. You heard the sound of someone moving, but you couldn't stop crying at this point. There was no point in you trying to run away anymore. Even if you tried, the people you were running away from had guns. You couldn't outrun a bullet, no matter how hard you tried.

"Hey, hey, it's okay."

You felt a hand on your shoulder and looked up. Leaning over you was a girl from the senior class. There was blood on her clothes and you could see the fear in her eyes, but she still did her best to hold a soft smile as she helped you up.

"Is anyone else alive?" she quietly called into the room.

You heard a few small "yes"s and some whimpers. The girl moved you to where you were sitting under one of the desks along the walls before crawling off to go help the other students that were still alive.

"There is an armed intruder in the school. They are currently in the back halls heading towards the commons. All students need to get inside a classroom and all teachers must lock and barricade classroom doors," you heard one of the staff announce over the loudspeakers.

You noticed the senior girl crawl over to the main door before shutting and locking it. You heard another lock click and looked over to see one of the boys from the junior class locking the door to the outside.

"Alright, we need to barricade the doors, close the blinds, and find something to defend ourselves. Mr. Douglas said that if we need to, we can use any of the pottery pieces or tools to defend ourselves. So, I want everyone to help move the tables and chairs to barricade both the classroom entrance and the back entrance," the senior girl said. You watched as everyone who was still alive began to help move the tables and chairs around. You felt a hand on your shoulder, causing you to jump. Looking up, you saw the senior girl smiling down at you. "(y/n), help me close the blinds and shut off the lights."

You nodded and slowly began to get up. Your legs were shaking and your eyes were watering. You avoided looking at the body of your friend. Hell, you avoided looking at any of the unmoving bodies. It made you want to vomit. You made your way over to the curtains, closing them with the help of another student. As you were closing them, you saw a white van parked outside the back of the school. You shuddered, knowing there could still be people inside it.

Almost as soon as the curtains were closed the lights went off, causing you to tense up.

"Alright, everyone into the teacher's office. We're going to try and wait this all out until the cops get here," the senior girl said.

With that, everyone darted into the teacher's office. You watched as the door was locked and barricaded with the desk and the lights were shut off. Before they were shut off, you were able to count seven other people with you.

It was mostly silent. The only sounds that disturbed that silence were the occasional announcement of where the intruders were and the occasional echo of a gunshot. The senior girl was sitting next to you, allowing you to curl up into her side. She rubbed circles into your back, her own way of trying to help you stay calm.

Then, you heard the sound of sniffling quickly turning into crying.

"I don't wanna die!" one of the kids wailed.

"Hey, hey! It's okay! It's gonna be okay! I promise you, we're gonna be okay," the senior girl said. There was some shifting and the sound of crying and sniffling became much closer. "We're gonna make it through this. I know all of the freshmen here haven't even done an ALICE drill, but trust me when I say it's gonna be okay. The school knows what they're doing and will make sure all of us are okay. We're strong, we're brave. I know this is scary but it's gonna be okay."

You let a few tears slide as you nodded into the girl's side. You were going to be okay. Everything would be fine. She was a senior; she knew what she was doing. Before long, you could hear the sound of police sirens in the distance and then the announcement that the intruders had been captured.

The rest was a blur. You left the school, clinging to the senior girl's arm. She made her parents stay while you waited for yours to come pick you up. You sobbed into her jacket as the weight of what just happened finally hit. She took your phone, putting her number into it before calling up your parents when they didn't arrive. Your best friend's parents showed up, asking about what had happened to their child. All you could do was whimper out an "it should've been me".

Once your parents picked you up, they took you home. They made sure that you were comfortable that night, getting you all your comfort food and items. However, as you listened to music to try and calm you down, you could hear the sounds of your parents yelling about what was best for you now.
