"You're next."
The figure disappeared as soon as it had appeared and Steve's vision went dark.
Silence. Silence was all to be heard when Steve's eyes flickered open. His blurry vision provided him little explanation. He slowly sat up, trying to remember what happened. His vision cleared a small bit as his head swiveled around, struggling to make sense of his surroundings. His hand moved to wipe something from his eye, which instantly made it clear.
Tears.
He wiped his other eye and his face to find it wet. Looking down at himself he saw his clothes were soaked in blood. That made him remember. His breathing quickened when he saw Alex on the floor, her clothes even more bloodstained then before. "Alex..." He felt dizzy as he got to his knees and weakly crawled over to her. He grabbed her shoulders, which had two wounds that were still bleeding. He felt his blood pumping in his ears, making his head hurt. He held her wrist in his hand and checked her pulse. Weak. But there.
He looked outside the shattered glass door to the sight of the woods around his house on fire, lighting the darkness in a flickering glow.
They had to get out of there.
"I'm too weak..." Steve looked down at Alex's bloody face and flashbacks of the events that had happened who knows how long before.
"I can't carry her, or even drag her... She's so hurt..."
He collapsed to the ground next to her. "I can't even get myself out." He looked outside again at the growing fire in his back woods. The flammable blocks he used to build his portal room were catching to it as it grew ever nearer to his house. His mind began to wind down as he continued to stare at it. His sight was losing focus but in the shadow of the light, he saw a dark figure standing in the fire.
"In the fire... How..." It remained still, either staring at him or staring the other way, Steve couldn't tell. He lost his vision, a blanket of darkness covering his eyes. He fought the impending unconsciousness overcoming him, but to no avail. He couldn't move his limbs, they were too heavy, it felt like gravity was amplifying against him. A dark whisper lingered in his mind, repeating itself continually until his mind closed down.
"Only god can save you now. Death always wins the race."

"Listen to me."
"Who are you?"
"You have to listen to me."
"Where am I?"
"You're asleep. Unconscious."
"Why?"
"You'll remember when you wake up."
"Who are you?"
"You can't know. You won't understand. You have to listen to me."
"Where am I?"
"You won't understand. You must listen to me."
"What's happening?"
"You and your companion are in great danger."
"My companion... Alex..."
"Yes. Steve, you have to remember this. Don't forget what I tell you now, both of your lives depend on it.
When you wake up, run. Run as far and as fast as you can. Get as far away as possible from your current location. Death is on your tail. He has no plans that involve mercy. Only pain and suffering. You have to protect Alex with all your power, as she does you."
