JADE ROSIER WALKED DOWN the stairs of the Rosier family's London townhouse contently, unaware of the bad news she was about to receive. As she stepped off the last stair, she smoothed over her grey knit cardigan, which covered the top of her black miniskirt. Her dark hair flowed behind her as she walked into the kitchen, where her brother, Nicholas Rosier, was seated at the kitchen table drinking a mug of coffee while reading the Daily Prophet.

"Morning Nico," Jade announced her presence to him, "my trunk is downstairs. Shall we leave soon?"

Nicholas peered over the newspaper at her and shook his head, "We must wait on mother and father, they insisted on accompanying you to the station."

Instantly, Jade felt her mouth dry up as she gaped at him with wide eyes. The coffee she was pouring into a mug almost spilled on the counter. She managed to tip the coffee pot the other way right before she could make a mess.

The summer Jade had away from her parents was tarnished by that one sentence. She had seen her parents only once when they had picked her up at King's Cross at the end of her fifth year. Eugenia and Vincent Rosier had spent the majority of their summer at Rosier Manor in Wiltshire. They came back to the townhouse once every two weeks to check on things. Whenever this happened, Jade made sure she wasn't there. She was surprised they let her stay in London with her older brother, who now worked at the Ministry of Magic, but she was not going to question them.

Jade tried to say something in response, but words failed her. She heard a faint crack come from the foyer, and dread washed over her. Eugenia and Vicent Rosier strode into the kitchen with their chins raised, looking expectantly at their daughter. Nicholas gave her a sympathetic look before turning his attention to their parents.

"Nicholas," Vincent greeted, clapping his son on the back before acknowledging Jade with a detached nod. "Jade."

Eugenia wasted no time in unleashing her disapproval. "Jade Rosier, that skirt is far too short," She spat. "Are you ready to go or will you keep us waiting?"

Her black combat boots felt heavier as Jade stared at the floor, avoiding Eugenia's sharp glare. "I'm ready."

She followed her parents to the foyer, her brother close behind her. Vincent and Nicholas apparated first. Eugenia tightly wrapped her hand around Jade's wrist as Jade grabbed the handle of her trunk.

"You will not embarrass me this year," Eugenia hissed, fingers tightening painfully around Jade's wrist. "Especially after that ruckus you and your filthy friends caused at the Ministry in June."

"By what? Fighting Death Eaters? Being friends with people you deem not worthy? Too late," Jade shot back.

Eugenia slapped her swiftly with her other hand before apparating with Jade to Platform 9 3/4. Jade clenched her teeth at the stinging pain she felt on her cheek. Vincent and Nicholas joined their side and Eugenia let go of her wrist. Jade blinked back the tears that began to form, not wanting to give her mother the satisfaction.

They all followed her to the entrance of the Hogwarts Express where other parents were saying goodbye to their children.

"Stay focused on your studies," Vincent told her giving her a curt nod.

"We'll see you for the holidays," Eugenia said before grabbing her husband's arm and walking over to a corner.

Nicholas looked at her before pulling her into a tight hug, "Be careful, Jay. Hogwarts might not be safe for much longer."
