“Alright Jack, it’s been a few weeks, is my hair ever going to go back to normal?” “I’m sorry Sig, but no.” “Well why not?” I honestly miss my green eyes and black hair, I almost fell as though I were stripped of my identity. “Hey! Don’t worry about it, you’re still beautiful to me.” I instantly blush. Ed went and got me black hair dye, but it literally washed away completely. At least my hair is still like a curtain for me. I roll on my side and look at Jack who it already lying facing me. “Jack, were you the one who saved me?” “I’m sorry I didn’t get there sooner, but I did my best.” “You were there?” “Kind of…” Jack trails off and suddenly looks very melancholy. “Care to elaborate Jack?” I hope that’s enough for him to reveal what he’s thinking.
“Well, I was in the park with kids in Montana, but then I got this sense of dread and knew it was you so I rushed as quickly as I could to find you falling down through the ice. So I dove in after you, I knew your pond was your pond and I should’ve made the ice thicker for you. But I wasn’t thinking that far ahead. So once I actually found you in the water, your ankle was bound by some kind of rope that was stuck at the bottom, so I had to cut you loose and then rush you to the top. But you had already stopped breathing, so I did something.” “What did you do Jack?” “Well, I saved you the only way I knew possible. See, it’s kind of like a mouth to mouth, but since you died in the way you did, my breath - in lack of better wording- frosted over your mortality. The hair. The eyes. They’re both signs that you are no longer human, but a snow spirit.” “What?” “You’re no human, but you are. Essentially, you’re now trapped in your body - at least your soul is. When you die, you’ll join the others and myself in Father Winter’s kingdom. And then you’ll find out what your specific power is. Mine is starting winter and maintaining the winter. You could get anything from that to making snowflakes or tossing them. Making sleet, or even transporting hail for summer.”
I just look at Jack. This is a lot to take in. So I’m never really going to die? Will I still be me, or? “Sigourney, will you please say something?” “I don’t know what to say Jack, I’m very overwhelmed right now.” “I know it’s a lot, but please I want to help you process this. Do you have any questions?” “Yeah. So am I going to age?” “Yes, you’ll live your life just like you normally would.” “and when I die?” “You’ll go back to the age you were the day of the accident and remain that way.” “Will I remember, any of this? Will I remember growing old and the life I build?” “Yes.” “And what if I don’t believe any of this?” “You kind of don’t have a choice anymore. Normally if you didn’t believe you wouldn’t be able to see me. However, now since you’re one of us, you’ll always be able to see.” “Oh.” “Do you not believe anymore Sigourney?” I sit up and run my hands through my hair. “It’s not that I don’t believe, I just don’t know how I feel about this.” “Well what do you mean?” I look back at Jack as he sits up. “I don’t know Jack, I always thought there were two places you went after you died, Heaven or Hell. This kind of goes against everything I ever thought growing up. So where did my family go? Are they some kind of road spirits now? Or trapped in the hospitals?” “No, they most certainly moved on, think of this as being an Earth bound spirit because you were selected to do something beyond that.” “Okay.”
Jack grabs my hands and comes around so he’s facing me. “Sig, are you actually okay?” “Yeah, so does this mean I might get Blossom’s ice breath?” Jack laughs at that. I love his laugh. “You just might my little Blossom.” Jack kisses my nose. “I think it’s time for you to sleep baby. It’s getting late and you have school tomorrow.” “I know, and you have to go ice some things over, don’t you?” “You know me so well Sig, I’ll see you tomorrow.” Jack stands while I remain sitting on my bed. “Good night Jack.” “Goodnight Sigourney, I want to try something first….” He trials off as I look up with a raised eyebrow. Jack leans downs and touches his lips to mine. It’s strange how cold yet soft and pliable they are. And all too fast my first kiss has ended. “Goodnight Sigourney, I love you.” “I love you too Jack Frost.”
