Maybe it’s normal that she doesn’t understand. Maybe it’s better that she doesn’t understand.
Maybe it’s worse.
Does she know that I would die for her? To protect her? My dreams seem too unreal, but I know their reflecting my thoughts, my deepest worries. And I’m only slightly aware that I’m thrashing around in my sleep. But I’m fully aware of Katniss’ rough hands and voice telling me to wake up.
“Peeta? Peeta, wake up. We need to move, we need to get out of here.” Her voice winds its way through my brain, waking me up like cold water.
“Yah, yah, I’m good, let’s go.” I stand up and collect my things. Looking around at this hellhole that is keeping us from being sane.
“Katniss.” My lips form the words.
“Mmhm?” She looks up at me expectantly.
“I love you.” The words come out of my mouth with ease. No hesitation.
“Peeta, I love you too. More probably.” She smiles at me.
“We’re equal in love.” I smile back at her, the same smug look on my face.
She leans over and kisses me.
