I couldn't sleep that night thinking about what Madison had said.
They call it Divergent. Divergent.  Divergent.
I had never heard that word before and I was getting desperate to know what it meant.  I am not sure what my parents expected of me.

I woke with a jerk the next day. I was probably having a nightmare judging by the sweat on my grey shirt. You're divergent, I kept saying to myself. Today was the day I was going to choose a faction where i am going to stay for the rest of my life. I got up, took a shower and got dressed in my usual grey, baggy clothes. I was so unsure of what faction I was going for. I wondered how Joelle had managed to choose. What made her choose Dauntless,  probably because her aptitude test told her to. One thing I was definitely sure of was that I was not staying in Abnegation. I walk into the hall where the Choosing Ceremony was going to take place, along with my parents. All the people were seated according to their factions with Candor and Dauntless on each corner and Abnegation exactly in the middle having Erudite to its left and Amity on the right.
Tamara, my neighbour,  was seated with her parents already and I took a place next to her. Her hands were shaking and I couls tell she was nervous.
"Hey," I tried to break the ice. She was pretty with her blonde hair and sky blue eyes. Me and her never got along much but she was probably the only person I talked to at school. "Nervous? "
She flashed me her sweet smile and nodded. I smiled back.
The head Erudite greeted us and introduced herself as Kate Moss.  Since they were all known for their intelligence, they were basically the leaders of the whole Society. She gave a speech about how our aptitude tests had given us the results to help us choose our factions. Hearing that my palms felt sweaty and my mother took my hand squeezing it slightly. She probably guessed I was terrified. After a few more words they started to call out according to our last names. Since my last name was Markham, I was probably going to be called out somewhere in the middle.
The first kid they called out was Jonathan Albert. He was Amity and to my surprise he chose Abnegation.  There was a round of applause from our faction, if you count just clapping twice an applause.
Tamara Bond was the next name they called out. She timidly got up and I whispered good luck to her not even sure if she heard me.
She slowly walked to the platform where they had placed the 5 pots containing rocks for each faction. She picked up the blade and without hesitation let her blood drop into the Erudite pot.
She was so sure of what to choose and for a minute envied her for that. After a few names it was finally my turn.
Selena Markham. I felt my throat go dry.  I had absolutely no idea what to choose. Amity or Dauntless.  Those were the 2 traits Madison had said I possessed.
My mother squeezed my hand one last time and I walked to the platform towards to pots. I felt my hands shake as I picked the blade. I closed my eyes and the first person who flashed into my mind was Joelle. Sweet, calm Joelle. I was now sure of what faction I was going to choose and to my parents dismay I did not end up choosing Abnegation.  I cut my hand into another pot.
Dauntless.
