Nash has always had a thing for bad boys, he kept that piece of information to himself but in 9th it was Taylor Caniff, in 10th grade it was Jack Gilinsky, in 11th grade it was Sammy Wilkinson. He never approached them, he was too shy for that but he would daydream about them and stare when he thought no one was looking.
Nash tries to makes sense of his proclivity for bad boys with muscles and tattoos and the only thing he can come up with is that they're complete opposites from him. He comes from a conservative upper middle class family, who attend church every Sunday and say grace before every meal. He does his homework every night, he gets good grades, and he's always home before sundown. He never goes out and parties during the weekend, instead he opts to spend time with his little sister Skylynn. She makes his entire boring existence tolerable.
He knows if his parents had any clue what Nash was really like in his head he'd be grounded for life. They want him to attend a local Christian university but Nash has his heart set on one 3 hours away. It's close enough for him to drive home during the weekend but far enough to be out of his parents reach. He intends to experience all of the things he missed out on during high school.
His older brother Will left the state as soon as he could, he attends a university in Florida and Nash's parents would approve of Nash going to that school but he's tire of being Will Grier's little brother. He needs to find out who he is for himself. He only has a handful of friends, Matt, JJ and Aaron are the closest ones to him. He trusts them with everything. They all want to attend the same university and experience all of their firsts together.
Nash is currently in his room, he has his headphones plugged into his laptop and he's rapidly tapping on his phone. He's supposed to be doing his homework but the group chat distracted him from it. He's playing rap through his headphones, his parents would never approve if they knew the kind of music he listened to. Nash isn't stupid, he acts like the perfect son so that they don't suspect anything. It's worked for him so far.
Matt found an abandoned pool and he wants to jump over the fence and skateboard in it. Nash is completely on board with the plan but JJ and Aaron are reluctant to agree to go. Nash is trying hard to convince them, it won't be as much fun if only him and Matt go.
There's a knock on his door and when he pulls out his headphones and turns just as the door is opening.
"Mom says dinner is ready," Hayes tells him.
"Thanks." Nash replies and he turns around without saying anything else to Hayes. They don't have the best relationship because they really do not have much in common. Hayes is the golden boy of the family, he plays football just like his father wants him to and he has he facade of being a total sweetheart, but Nash sees right through him. He's always extra careful when Hayes is around because if he catches a whiff of Nash's true tastes he would run to their parents immediately. Hayes likes to pretend he's not a hypocrite and that just infuriates Nash.
He goes back to texting and he and Matt are finally able to convince Aaron and JJ to come long and skateboard in the abandoned pool. Aaron is the only one in their circle with a car so he always gets stuck picking all of them up. They plan to leave by noon on Saturday, Nash knows it won't be a problem because his parents usually give him freedom to do what he wants on Saturdays. They approve of Nash's friends so when he says he's going out with them they give him permission to go out.
Nash decides to skip dinner and finish his assignment so he doesn't have it hanging over his head on Sunday. By the time he finishes his homework it's almost 10pm, he never got dinner and no one came to check on him. It's pretty typical behavior, he attributes it to the middle child syndrome. Technically he isn't the middle child anymore but the situation really hasn't changed.
