warning: violence

"CARRYIN' THE BANNER!" Jack yelled as he, Spot and Davey stood on stage.

Every other New York newsie that showed up for up from their seats and punched their air, cheering for him.

"So we've come a long way, but we ain't there yet! Maybe it's only gonna get tougher from now on. But that's fine, we'd just gonna get tougher with it!" Jack yelled, Eleanor cheering him on.

"But also ... we's gotta get smart and start listenin' to my pal, David. Who says 'stop soakin the scabs'." Jack adds on.

"What are we supposed to do to the bums, kiss 'em?" Race joked.

"Hey look, any scab I see, I soak 'em. Period." Spot butt in. "No, no, no! That's what they want us to do. If we get violent, it's just playin' into their hands." Davey tried to explain.

"They're gonna be playin' with my hands, alright. Because it ain't what they say, it's what we say. And nobody ain't gonna listen to us unless we make 'em." Spot argued, everyone cheering for him.

"You got no brains. We're startin' to fight each other. It's just what the big shots wanna see. That were street trash, street rats with no brains, no respect for nothin' including ourselves!" Jack yelled, everyone sitting down and listening.

"So here's how it is! If we don't act together, we're nothin'. If we don't stick together, we're nothin'. And if we can't even trust each other, then we's nothin'!"

"Tell 'em Jack!" Blink yelled from the balcony. "So, what's it gonna be?" Jack yelled.

"Listen to jack, we're with you jack." Race spoke. "I'm with ya" ellie raised her voice a little.

"So, what'do you say Spot?" Jack looks down at the shorter boy.

"I say, that what you say, is what I say." The two boys spit shook and the crowd cheered.

The red curtains behind them opened to reveal Medda in a pink dress. The boys took their seats as the crowd cheered for her.

Jack took his seat next to Eleanor and lay back against her shoulder a little.

Medda began singing and everyone sang and danced.

"High times, Hard times
Sometimes the living is sweet
and sometimes there's nothing to eat
But I always land on my feet
So when there's dry times
I wait for high times and then
I put on my best and I stick out my chest
And I'm off to the races again!"

"Hello Newsies, what's new?" Medda put her pink umbrella up and twirled it around.

"So your old lady don't love you no more?
So you're afraid there's a wolf at your door?
So you got streetrats that scream in your ear?
You win some you lose some my dear!
Oh, High times, Hard times
Sometimes the living is sweet"

"And sometimes there's nothing to eat but I always land on my feet" jack and ellie sang along. Jack looked at the girl next to him, glancing down at her lips and back up to her eyes.

A blush crept onto Eleanor's cheeks as she nudged jack to go and dance with her mother.

"So when there's dry times
I wait for high times and then
I put on my best and I stick out my chest
And I'm off to the races again!
I put on my best! (I put on my best!)
Ah, yes, and I stick out my chest! (I stick out my chest!)
And I'm off! (And I'm off!)
And I'm off! (And I'm off!)
And I'm off to the races again!"

Eleanor cheered for her as loud as she could, her mother pulling her into a hug at the end.

"You look great!" Eleanor smiled at her. "As do you my girl, I bet someone else does aswell" she whispered the last part, motioning to jack who she had taken note was staring and dancing with her all night.

"Excuse me, aren't you warden Snyder? Bryan Denton of The Sun. How do you do, sir? I heard about your wonderful work with the children and I wondered if I might get an interview with you. Let me get that correct, that's Snyder as in 'snide'?" Denton tried to distract him.

Davey noticed and whispered to spot, Spot then ran and told Eleanor.

"Jack! Jack! It's Snyder- it's sny-" she yelled, but the singing was too loud so she pulled him closer. "It's Snyder! With Denton!" She told him, telling her mother and the others around her.

Jack grabbed Eleanor's hand, David and les following not so far behind. Medda tried to take race with her behind the curtains so he wouldn't get taken but the bulls got to him and hit him to the floor as the managers took medda off stage.

"Looks like you're goin' back to Francis Sullivan. Huh?" Ellie whisper yelled as they ran to an exit.

"Shut it, Ellie. Just go I'll meet you out there. stay with Les" he kissed her cheek, almost touching her lip as he ran off with david.

She left the building, taking les with her.

"You alright, you look a little red?" Les looked up at her. "Oh- oh yeah ... no I'm fine" she nodded, calming herself down after what happened in there.

Ellie and Les waited outside with Denton as the bulls began throwing kids out and fighting them if they started a fight.

Jack tried to escape through the horses but couldn't find a gap. He ran back inside, Eleanor following him with David close behind her.

As soon as she entered the lobby, a scabber upper cut him, making him fall back onto the bulls behind him.

"Let him go, you hear me! Hey- Get off of him!" Eleanor practically screamed, she got a bit of attention but not from the bulls.

Jack was taken away as Eleanor sat on the steps after everything had quietened down.

"Go home, Davey ... we'll go to court tomorrow" Eleanor kept her head down, not looking up.

"It's not Davey" medda spoke as she sat down beside her. "Ma" ellie looked up, her cheeks stained with tears.

"Oh, baby what's up?" She sighed at the sight of her daughter crying.

"I just watched my best friend almost get knocked out and then taken to jail ... that's what" she huffed, trying to keep the waterworks off.

"I saw you both in the crowd, I also saw what happened when he made you and Les leave" Medda brushed her curly and now messy blonde hair out of her face.

Ellie groaned at the thought, hiding her face again. "He's messing with your feelings and he doesn't know it ... tell him what he's doing love." She wipes the tear stains as good as she could.
