Narrator: Our story begins on the
Island of Grand Bahama. The year is 2014, date July 23rd. Summers in the Bahamas can be quite brutal for locals. As a means of beating the heat some turn to beaches, whiles others turn to pools. Only legends really know that the best way to beat the heat is to play safely in a marine blue hole during low tide. These marine blue holes are tidal influenced. During low tide when water is dripping these holes expel water from their cave systems. During high tide water will be sucked back into these cave systems. It's very dangerous to be inside these holes during this period. There are absolutely no air pockets inside the cave systems. What is a blue hole you may ask? If you're not familiar, don't worry we've got you covered. Now you may be familiar with terms such as sinkholes, or cenote. Blue holes can be described & compared to being similar as these. Let's dive into this further. Pun intended. The formation of blue holes in the Bahamas, goes along with the formation, & how islands in the Bahamas came to be, over 200 million years in the making. Let's dive into this a bit further, taking a brief look at how these holes are formed. With water levels rising & dropping during the last ice age period, this would have an effect on the islands of the Bahamas. When glaciers melt water level rises, and when glaciers increase in size, water level drops, water levels would drop hundreds of feet. With water levels dropping this would cause parts of the island to collapse / sink with in itself. The moving water would erode the soft rock, carving into it & creating extensive caves & their sink holes. These sinkholes would eventually be flooded out with water on numerous occasions as the process repeats itself. These sinkholes would be flooded out with water over the past 20,000 years giving us marine blue holes, & inland blue holes.
Holes that were formed inland are referred to as inland blue holes. These holes would contain a layer of fresh water, that sits above seawater. The two types of water remain seperately by temperature, and also what is known as a Halocline. Blue holes are simply called blue holes based upon looking at them from a aerial point of view. These inland holes would become the islands drinking lens. Our current focus in the year 2014 with the date given takes place at the "Boiling hole". The "Boiling hole" is located in western part of Grand Bahama island. Located in the section known as eight mile rock.
The sounds of kids playing, & water splashing fills the air. As they take turns jumping into hole, chasing each other around. Parents watching attentively, as they urge their kids to be careful of the mouth that connects to the ocean. Although it poses no real dangers, climbing over the sharp jagged rocks ain't no fun. All was calm the first five or six times they swam, & ran around the hole. Everything changed in moments though. Cries began to rang out as a little girl no older then 5 begins to get pulled out to the ocean. Frantically & desperately trying to swim against the current pulling her out but despite her best efforts she was unable to swim against the current. Panicking as she is swept out to the ocean. For a brief moment she disappears , as her dad rushes towards the ledge followed by the parents of the other kids. Desperately scanning the water trying to locate her, as some of the adults try to hold the worried father back. Most of the kids begin to cry as they begin to climb the ladder emerging from the hole. Comforted by their parents as 30 minutes passes by. Police & other rescue services arrive on the scene. Fearing the worst the father passes out, as he watch the dive & rescue team get their gear on. Police officers begin to take statements from witnesses. Everything comes to halt, as the captain of the dive team signals everyone to a group coming into shore. Specifically the red float pulling a lil girl that stands out from the crowd. Matching the description of the little girl that seemingly vanished. Everyone takes in a deep breathe as the group emerges. The leader dressed in a yellow long sleeve shirt & navy blue shorts. As everyone begins to disperse, cries of a mother begins to ring out. Her son is now missing, seemingly vanishing without a trace. The only evidence of the boy's disappearance a faint trace of blood on the surface of the actual blue hole. Pieces of his swimming trunks floating a top of the surface. The child's mother faints as that is all to tell the tail of what may have happened.
Narrator: Unbeknownst to them as they focused on the little girl, one child never left the hole. As the others exit something caught his attention. It's true that curiosity killed the cat or well in this case snuffed out a young boy's life. One could only imagine as he approached the actual blue hole which one should truly be weary of. He locks eyes with a creature so sinister that the boy froze with fear. Tentacles slowly reaching out for him as the creature grins revealing it's sharp teeth. With eyes colder than ice, before the boy is able to scream a tentacle is quickly wrapped around his mouth. The width of the tentacle also covered his neck, & most of his upper body. *Muffled screams & cries*. The boy desperately fights for his life as the creature pulls him closer & closer to it's jaws. Ripping off the layers of clothing with its tentacles. Cunning and wise the creature identifies the clothes as non-edible. Try as he tries the strength begins to slowly fades from the boys body. The creature let's the terrified boy go. Pushing him to the surface. Allowing the boy to catch his breath, but he's to weak, & unable to scream. In shock the boy trembles as he makes a beeline for the ladder. He is grabbed again by the leg, & thrashed around violently. Before being pulled under again. Before the boy can pass out the creature rips the boys limbs off violently one by one. Putting the boy into shock as everything begins to go dark as he breathes his last breath. His lungs now filled with seawater as he slowly closes his eyes, trying to exhale one last time. Bubbles slowly rise to the surface before stopping abrubtly. Shooting off a large cloud off ink before swimming off, retreating it's way back into the intricate cave system with it's prey in tow. All the while everyone didn't notice the boy was missing until it was to late. Even if so they'd all probably ended up sharing the same fate as the boy. Rescue teams would search & explore the caverns over the next few months. With no leads or evidence leading to the boy's assumed remains to be discovered. Due to the risk in exploring the caves the team was unable to carry all the necessary gear they may have needed. It would be wise to not risk a black out, & cause parts of the cave to collapse. After months exploring, & mapping, they were only able to explore a tiny portion of the cave. Concluding their investigation, & exploration in September. They suggest the boy might have dived into the cave to take a look. In a haste he may have swam up to fast hitting his head against a the top of the hole. Blacking out, & loosing plenty of blood. His clothes was torn as his body rubbed against the surface of the hole. Before sinking to the bottom, & being pulled through the cave system. Ending a three month search believing this to be the truth, & the narrative they'll stick with.
