Chapter One

It's hard to put a finger on what emotion I'm feeling. Somewhere between pissed off and terrified. But since it's easier for me to express anger, that's the one I act on.

"You fucking idiot," I say.

My younger brother hangs his head in shame. His lip is busted, a purple bruise forms around his left eye. The sight makes me furious. At my brother  for getting himself into this situation, and at the people who did it to him.

"You got involved with a fucking gang?" I seethe through my teeth.

I'm pacing back and forth, pinching the bridge of my nose with my thumb and forefinger.

"I'm sorry, (Y/N)." He doesn't look at me, staring down at his bruised knuckles, his black bangs falling over his eyes.

"Sorry isn't good enough! You've not only endangered your own life, but that of mine and Auntie Soo!"

He says nothing, all that I'm met with is heavy silence.

"Look at me, Dae-Hyung!" I yell, stepping forward and grabbing his shoulders. Finally, his hazel eyes meet mine. There's guilt swirling through them. "How much do you owe them?" I demand.

He hesitates so I shake his shoulders. "Tell me!" I say.

He drops his head again. "Five million won," his words are quiet, but ring loud in my ears.

I release his shoulders and step back in shock. Five million.

"How much time."

"What?" he asks.

"How. Much. Time. Do. We. Have. To. Pay. Them."

He bites the inside of his cheek as he always does when nervous.

"Two weeks."

I no longer know how to react. My mind is spinning and my head throbs, so I sit down. I just can't believe it. Any of it. My sixteen year old brother has managed to get caught up in a gang and I had no idea about any of it. That is until he tried to sneak into the house with blood dripping from his nose.

I'm a terrible sister. How did he keep this from me? How didn't I notice he was in trouble?

"What were you thinking," I whisper, trying to control the panic rising in my chest.

"About you. And Auntie. And the shithole we live in." He sighs. "I wanted to help us."

I put my head in my hands, breathing deeply. "And what happened to the money?"

"I lost it."

I want to cry from frustration, but the tears just won't come. "How did you lose it?"

"Someone stole it from my pocket. I tried to catch them but they got away."

I let out a humourless laugh. "Someone stole the money you stole. How ironic."

Dae-Hyung is silent again while I wrack my brain of what the fuck I'm going to do.

The gang he stole from found him today, beat the shit out of him, and will kill us if the money is not returned in two weeks time.

We're broke, no money in savings, we barely can afford rent each week. Auntie Soo is an alcoholic who hasn't moved off the couch in months. I'm the only one who has a job but the pay is shit.

There's little chance I'll be able to gather together five million won in two fucking weeks. The only way that's possible is if I sell a kidney or offer sexual favours to local creeps for money. And I'm not a huge fan of either of those options.

"What are we going to do, (Y/N)?" my brother whispers.

"We could leave the city. Move across the country."

"They have people in all parts of the country. They'd find us eventually."

"I know, Dae-Hyung. Truth is, I don't know what we're going to do," I say. "However, I will figure it out. I'll get us out of this."

He doesn't believe that, it's clear on his face. But my words are true. I will go to the ends of the Earth to protect this boy. I don't care what I need to do. No one's touching him.

"In the mean time, stay away from anyone associated with the gang. Keep your head down. Go to school as usual." I stand up and walk back over to him, then kneel in front of him, grabbing his hands in my own. "I'll keep us safe. I won't let anything happen to us."

He frowns. "I should be the one telling you that. I'm the man of the house."

"That's sexist bull crap and you know it," I say sternly. "Dae-Hyung, promise me you'll keep out of trouble. Promise me."

"Okay," he presses his lips into a thin line. "I promise."

"Good." I stand up. "I have to go to work. Now you stay home and put ice on that eye," I say, gesturing to his bruised face.

I have no idea how I'm going to function at work with all this newfound knowledge. At least the journey there will give me time to think about how I'll get us out of this shit.

It was an exhausting shift. Serving customers in a busy café while also worrying about how to keep your brother alive proves to take a lot of energy out of you.

I wait at the station for my train to take me home, my eyelids drooping but the adrenaline of the night keeping me awake.

In my peripheral vision, I notice a man sit down beside me on the bench. I don't pay him much mind until I get the uncomfortable feeling he's staring at me.

My suspicions prove to be true when I turn my head and find a man in a suit looking directly at me. There is a brief case by his side.

"Yes? What is it?" I snap, not in the mood to deal with some creep.

He smiles. It's a rather handsome smile, but quite eerie too.

"Would you like to play a game?" is all he asks.

I furrow my eyebrows and say, "No," without hesitation. Who asks strangers that?

His smile does not falter. "What if I said I'll pay you one hundred thousand won if you were to win?" he says.

"Still no. You're clearly trying to scam me. Not in the mood to deal with that shit right now, thanks."

He says nothing; instead opens up his suit case.

My bored expression does not change until I find that the case is filled to the brim with cash.

A lot of cash.

My eyebrows shoot up and I straighten in my seat.

"How about now?" he asks, arching a brow, appearing as if he already knows what my answer is going to be.

I clear my throat, unable to tear my eyes away from the money.

"Um, what kind of game did you say it was again?"
