As Red excitedly rushes to Granny's house to ask if her new friend can join them for their picnic. Zeke hangs out by the redwood tree wondering if he should just go back to hiding in the woods. He imagines how the conversation between Granny and Red going.
"Granny, Granny, Granny!" Red shouts with excitement.
Zeke imagines a frail old lady standing the the middle of wild flowers saying,
"Yes Red, I'm in the back watering the flowers" the frail old lady responds.
"Granny, I met a new friend that I would love for you to meet." Red explains.
"Red?" Granny asks with a great deal of concern in her voice. What do you mean you just made a new friend? You only walked through the woods. Are you telling me you met someone in the woods?"
"Yes Granny, I met him in the woods, on my way"
"Him? Granny interrupts, "you are telling me you met a strange man in the woods? You also brought him to my home?"
"He's not really a man, Granny. Hesitantly Red confesses, He is kind of a wolf."
"What do you mean he is a wolf, Granny yells at Red. They are dangerous."
All of a sudden Red pops out from around the tree startling Zeke back to reality.
"Zeke! I'm happy to see you still here. Come on let's have a picnic. Red says with a smile.
"Umm, Red, Zeke says with hesitation. I hope that I don't make you mad by asking but, would it be too much to ask that we have the picnic over here?"
"Sure Zeke, that is completely fine, how about you start to set up and I'll run and get Granny." Red says compassionately.
"Are you sure about all of this?" Zeke questions.
"Oh Zeke, you have nothing to worry about I promise." Red says reassuring him.
As Red skips away before Zeke has a chance to say anything else. He pulls the picnic blanket out from the top of the basket. He spreads the blanket out on the ground right under the redwood Tree. All of a sudden Zeke hears Red,
"He's right over here on the other side of the redwood Granny."
An older voice replies, "Red don't forget I'm getting old and I don't move that fast anymore."
As Red and Granny round the tree Zeke stands up to be polite. Thinking to himself besides the gray hair and a few wrinkles on her face Granny doesn't look very old.
Granny walks straight up to him and gives him such a big hug it makes it slightly hard to breathe. Wow for a little old lady she is strong Zeke thinks to himself.
"It's nice to meet you Ma'am." Zeke says trying to catch his breath.
Granny notices the struggle he is have and let's go of Zeke. " It's nice to meet you too kiddo." Granny says.
"Well don't just stand there, interrupts Red. Come sit we can talk while we eat, please? Red asked.
Sitting down on the blanket Red begins to pass out dinnerware to everyone. Then she starts to pass the food around. Granny breaks the silence by saying,
"So Zeke Red tells me that you are from right here in the woods. Is that correct?"Granny asks.
"Umm, yes ma'am. My mother gave birth to me right over there in the big hallow tree, and I've been here ever since." Zeke replies.
Granny perks up with curiosity, "Your Mother would not happen to be Penelope, would she?" Granny asks startling Red and Zeke.
Zeke hesitates for a moment, then he becomes curious about where this is going so he tells her, "Yes Ma'am, my mother is Penelope, but how do you know that? I didn't tel Red her name."
"Well Zeke, first please call me Granny, everyone does now days. Second, you see that house right over there?" Granny asks, pointing to her cottage like home.
"Yes Ma'am, I mean Granny." Says Zeke.
"Well Zeke I have lived in that house since the day I was born. When my parents passed away they left it to me. My dear Alfred, bless his soul, was best friends with the one and only, Roy Wolfe. You look so much like him when he was your age, especially wearing that suit. Granny explains.
"But, Granny, Zeke protest. "My Grandfather for as long as I can remember has said we can not trust the humans. We must stay in the woods and stay invisible. So I don't understand how you knew him. Also you mentioned this suit, Grandfather hated suits."
"They made him feel like a house pet,"Granny finished his sentence. Well Zeke, back when I was in school it was a different world, until the accident anyway."
"What accident Granny ?" Red asked, why have I never heard of an accident."
"Oh my Red, I didn't even think about you not knowing the story." Granny confessed. Are the two of you up for a story, it's kind of long? Granny asked.
"Yes! Says Zeke without hesitation.
"Yes! " says Red full of confusion.
