Chapter 8: Horrifying Truths, Final Part

The words of the creature hit me harder than anything else possibly could have, physically and mentally. Not the part of me taking over Earth Mom's position.

The part about her death.

I knew and understood well that death was a natural thing, and that every living being would face it eventually. I accepted this a long time ago. No sense fighting to avoid that which has never been fought off, as it can't.

But Earth Mom is different. She's not just a creature or a person. She is literally the planet. Home of all, mother nature, the world. I thought she would be the exception, since she is not a creature or a human. She's a higher being. Something that I can only comprehend because of my specific powers. But now I learn that not even she will be spared from death.

I hadn't realised that my hand had let go of it's grip on the creature's metallic bonds during my shock. Even if I did notice during it, I wouldn't have cared. The thoughts darting in my head were far worse than anything it could do even if it did turn hostile all of a sudden.

Doubts and fears are hundreds of times worse than claws and fists.

Maybe I can stop it. Maybe I can help Earth Mom so that she doesn't have to die?

She doesn't have to die.

She can't.

She won't.

-3rd POV-

As Chikyu's doubts grew more malignant and rampant, the creature, now not at risk of having his limbs crushed by the boy controlling his metallic constraints, observed the distressed child, sympathy clearly painted on it's expression, despite having no actual facial features.

It knew that this day would come someday. It didn't know exactly when, but it knew that it would. It was an event in history that would have to happen eventually, no matter the cost or the wait, for it concerned all of Earth, the Kurna, the Unseen, as well as their brethren, The Forgotten.

The creature didn't interrupt or snap the boy out of his thoughts. It didn't think it could even if it wanted to, which it didn't. It was understandable that the child reacted as he did. He was just told that his second mother, who he reasonably believed was completely immortal and safe from the clutches of death, would die like the rest, and he would have to take over her role, one which he didn't even know the needs, requirements and responsibilities for. Needless to say, the responsibilities he would have to bare would outweigh those of all others in the world combined, for their very existence would depend on him and his choices.

The boy despaired in his mind for 10 minutes before focusing his attention back on the creature. To the surprise of the creature, he didn't choose to regain control of his bonds, simply looking at at him, seemingly ready to ask a few more questions. Despite this, the creature could clearly tell that he was still in major distress, but he was currently fixated on getting more answers to his questions.

"Why me? Why was I specifically chosen?", he asked, his voice several times lower than before being told the horrifying truths.

"You weren't. It was going to happen eventually, and there was never a specific person who would absolutely be chosen for the task. There was never a prophecy or a tale of fate, it was merely a matter of time. You simply had the best chance thanks to the powers that your mother and father had. Your mother, Ryuko Tsuchikawa, had the ability to control earth, and your father, Ushinatta Chichioya, had the ability of matter manipulation. The combination of these two powers into a son gave you the highest chance of being chosen. A chance of 88%. However, you were never guaranteed to be the one to be chosen. Anyone else could have been chosen. You simply had the greatest chance.", the creature responded.

The boy went silent for a few more minutes after that response. The shock he had received this single day was greater than any point in his whole life. It was understandable that he kept going silent for extended periods of time. There was much to process, and some bits of information would take multiple weeks, months even, to fully process correctly.

After around 10 minutes of contemplation, he asked another question.

"What is killing her?"

"Pollution, the devastation of natural areas to make way for construction, over-hunting, and other forms of negligence to the planet's health. Foolish humans constantly plunge the earth's health into worse and worse states on a daily basis without a care in the world. This is what will kill her.", the creature responded.

"Can I stop it enough to a point where she won't die? Stop the pollution, put contingencies in places that people might try to destroy, get rid of excessive hunting. Would that prevent it?", Chikyu asked.

"No. Even if you technically could, it would be far too large of a task for one person, even someone like you. The solutions to prevent are things that would take several decades at least in the first place. She would be dead long before that. I am sorry, but there is nothing you can do. If it offers any comfort, me and the rest of the Unseen have tried to stop it for several years. You aren't the only one who wants to save her. But we had to come to terms with inevitability long ago."

Once again, the boy went completely mute. That was also when he got up from his seat of stone. Wordlessly, he made his way to the entrance of the area that he came through, obviously making his way back, likely to leave the strange caves.

Before he exited, he asked the creature one last question.

"What is your name?"

"Kindan. The Knowledge Kurna."

With a wordless nod, he left the area, eventually getting out of the cave by going to where he arrived to it from in the first place.

He whistled, and the strange neon creatures that slowed his fall when he entered the cave arrived, and started taking him up. As he approached the area where the hole was that he jumped down, it opened up again.

The creatures took him above it and set him gently on the floor of his room, going back down the hole immediately afterwards as it closed up again when the rest of them went down it.

Chikyu, mentally drained, made his way to his bed and collapsed onto it, falling into a slumber instantly.
