"I think they know."

"How would they know?"

"Maybe they were at Casey's house last night?"

Stu and Billy are behind the school, where Billy told Stu to meet him after lunch. He has a weird feeling about you. (Y/N) always sat with them and always talked to them whenever possible. The three of you are the best of friends. Today you haven't spoken a single word and haven't looked them in the eye once. The two boys don't recall anything they could've done to piss you off because everything was perfectly fine yesterday. The only possible thing they could think of was that you heard or saw something last night or suspected them.

"If they do know, what are we gonna do about it?" Stu props his shoulder against the cement exterior of the school, staring at Billy uneasily.

"I don't want to kill them. I care about them," Billy frowns, pacing back and forth while wringing his hands.

"But what if they tell the police?" Stu ponders in a quiet voice.

Billy looks up at Stu with an unreadable expression, "I guess we'll see if they say anything to them today when they're called."

"What do we do until then? How do we make sure?" Stu asks nervously.

"I have an idea."

---

"So, (Y/N) do you remember seeing anything unusual when you got back to the Becker's?" The sheriff asks from his half-sitting, half-standing position against the principal's desk.

The police finally called you from your last class to question you. No one knew that you were at Casey's house except for them now. You wanted to keep it that way. They've already asked the basics like where you were when Casey was killed, did you see Steve, what time you left the house, etc. One of the more difficult ones to answer simply was why you left in a hurry. The answer was you didn't want to be next. However, none of those questions truly bothered you until this one because you had to lie.

"No, sir. The only thing I can really remember seeing when I got back was Casey hanging from the uh-" You rip your eyes from the sheriff's, staring at the ground as tears began to form in your tired eyes, "the tree."

Principal Himbry places a gentle hand on your shoulder, patting it before speaking up, "I think you've gotten all you need for now, officers."

Standing up and wiping your nose with the sleeve of your hoodie, you begin to gather your things, "If you need any more questions, don't hesitate to ask."

You didn't want to be too suspicious, so you gave the police an invitation to question you again if needed. Hopefully, they wouldn't need anything else. You walk out of the principal's office and head toward the bathroom. Once in there, you scour the stalls, making sure you are entirely alone before holing away in the handicap stall. You sit your backpack on the ground and sit next to it, pulling your knees to your chest. You cross your arms and rest them atop your knees, burying your face in them before you begin to cry. Today has been so exhausting, and you were unable to cry last night or today until now. So, you let it out quietly on a gross public high school bathroom floor. After a few minutes, you hear a noise. Your head shoots up from your arms when you hear it again. Leaning over closer to the floor, you see if there's anyone in the stalls. Nothing. You wipe your face and begin to get up off the floor to fix yourself in the mirror. Exiting the stall, your eyes meet your reflection. You look like the walking dead. Wiping at your eyes, you hear another noise. This time, you're sure you heard it. Having had enough of people and their pranks today, you begin slamming the stall doors open. Before slamming the final one open, you hesitate a moment but take a deep breath and do so anyway. The second you do, you look up to see the mask.

The same mask you saw Billy putting away in Stu's car.

Your eyes widen when the masked killer pulls their knife out.

Quickly, you run to the exit, but they grab you by the collar of your shirt, yanking you to them. You lift your leg, kicking them hard in the groin. Making sure they're on the ground, you bolt out of the bathroom and run like hell. You don't know whether it's Stu or Billy, but you hope it's just a brave copycat instead. Either way, you let the police in Mr. Himbry's office know.

The attack results in class being suspended until further notice, which excites your friends, especially Stu. You're not sure if you still wanna be his friend, but you decide that if it was him or Billy in the bathroom, you need to at least act as if you didn't see anything. You have to act like they're your best friends again. So, when Stu says he's throwing an impromptu party at his house tomorrow night, you have to reluctantly say you're going.

"On behalf of the student body, (Y/N), thank you!" Stu chuckles, letting out a wolf whistle that other students cheer in response to.

Rolling your eyes, you bump your shoulder into Stu's arm, "Shut up. I could've died!"

"I think they were just trying to scare you," Billy says from before you, where he's in stride with Sidney.

"Oh? I wonder why?" you accidentally wonder aloud. You regret it immediately when Randy appears behind you.

"Maybe because they suspect you know something," Randy says directly in your ear, his chest bumping against your backpack.

You roll your eyes again, "Randy, I'm beginning to think you're the killer with all this talk. You know?"

"Whatever, Randy," Tatum growls, with an audible smack of her hand as it makes contact with Randy's bicep, "All finger-pointing aside, we're glad you're not as quiet as you were this morning, though. We're all here for you (Y/N). We know today was probably terrifying."

Though "probably" was an understatement, you thank Tatum and catch up to Sidney and Billy.

"Hey," you breathe out to Sidney, "Did you wanna be my new English partner? I need to finish the end of this project."

"Yeah! My partner is kind of slacking anyway, so it's all good," Sidney says, chuckling lightly.

"Okay, your place or mine?" you ask, and you feel Billy's eyes on you.

"My dad is out of town this weekend, so we can have my house to ourselves."

"Okay, cool," you nod, briefly making eye contact with Billy before turning your attention back to the path of the bus stop.

You just couldn't shake the feeling that he and Stu were up to something.
