Why Them?

We was driving on the highway towards Fort Benning when the radiator hose on the R.V. started blowing smoke. We all parked and got out of the vehicles. Dale opened the hood, "where are we going to find a damn rad...." he turned around, "okay, that was dumb."

We all started looking for useful stuff. Food, water, medicine, clothes, and just about anything else. While looking dad started running slowly towards me, "go tell everyone to stay quite and get under the cars. Walkers!" He whisper yelled.

I spotted mom and Carol, "mom. You, Carol, Carl, and Sophia get under the cars now!" Then I darted back to Lisa.  Mom looked over at Carl and he crawled under the car next to the one Sophia crawled under. I grabbed Lisa and pushed her into a car then rolled under the car. We laid there while the herd passed.

When we thought the last one had passed Sophia slide out from under her car and 2 walkers spotted her. She made it out from under the car and over the guardrail. Dad and I were right behind her. We ran in different directions. I caught up to her first and grabbed her then dad came up behind us. Dad picked her up and grabbed my arm and we ran to a small creek bed.

"You and Jamie stay here. When you can't hear us anymore go back to the highway the same way we came. Keep the sun on your left shoulder," he said.

"I'm going with you. You can't take them both on. Sophia, left shoulder, okay?" She nodded her head.

Dad called the walkers down and we led them away from Sophia. We killed them then went back to the spot we left her at and she was gone, so we went back to the highway. When we got there she wasn't there. Dad, Daryl, Glenn, Shane, and I went back to the spot.

"I'm starting to wonder how much of what you told her stuck, Rick," Shane said.

"She got what I said," dad shot back.

"She understood us just fine," I shot at Shane.

Shane didn't say anything, just nodded his head and kept looking at me. We decided to send Shane and Glenn back to the highway. Dad tried to get me to go back with them to help keep everyone calm and busy. I refused not really wanting to be around Shane anymore then I had to.

We walked for a while on the track that Daryl had picked up. After a few minutes we came across a walker in a ditch. Daryl gave dad the sign to circle around, while I stayed up behind the trees to keep an eye out for Sophia and\or other walkers. When dad and Daryl had killed it I slide into the ditch when I heard them talking about gutting it, dad had his knife out and looked confused.

Daryl pulled his out, "I'll do it. My knife is sharper and bigger, plus I know what I'm doing."

                            "What about me?" I asked.

Daryl looked up at me and smiled a little, "you can hold him open so I can get the gut bag out."

"Better then just standing here doing nothing," I smiled.

When we got the gut bag out and open we was glad to see he just had a woodchuck, but there was still a chance. We decided then to go back to the highway due to it getting dark, "what do we tell Carol?" I asked.
