Alex had just come out of the library after spending the day slouched with books around her, studying for her development psych exam tomorrow. It was the last paper and she was thoroughly exhausted.
All of 23, Alexandra Black was studying to become a counsellor. She had always been good at listening to people. All of her friends always seemed to drift towards her in time of need. She loved that she was able to help people. She also hated being the centre of attention, so this was the perfect gig for her.
Alex entered her flat and dumped the books on the couch. She hung her jacket. Her apartment was pretty modest. She had moved here after staying on campus for a year. She had wanted to get a space of her own, she liked being independent.
The flat was small and cozy and wasn't too far from the campus, just a 15-minute walk. She couldn't wait to get a proper job so that she could afford a bigger place.
As she was about to head to her bedroom an all too familiar ringtone echoed across the empty apartment.
Damn, this thing is loud AF.
She made a mental note of decreasing the ringer volume later.
She was surprised to see the name that was flashing on the screen.
"Hey, Tom. Everything okay?" she asked her cousin.
"Yes kiddo, I'm fine. Can't I call my sister?" Tom chirped.
"Yeah, of course, you can! It's just....forget it. What is happening? How's your superfast life treating you?" Alex asked.
Tom had recently been elevated to a race engineer at McLaren Racing this season. Which was huge.
"It's going okay," he said not sounding too enthusiastic.
"Ooh, that means it isn't going as you expected," Alex retorted.
"Alex, how many times have a told you not to analyse me?" he sounded a touch irritated.
"I'm sorry, what's up?" Alex quickly changed the topic not wanting to put her brother in a sour mood.
"It's been a while since we've talked properly. Why don't you come to the MTC next week? We can catch up then? I can also give you a tour."
"Uhh, okay," Alex said a little unsure.
"Great, text me when you plan on visiting, can't wait to see you. I have to go now. Night Kiddo. I love you"
"Good Night, Tom. Take care."
That was so unlike Tom, something was definitely up.
But before she could think some more about Tom's weird phone call, her growling stomach called for attention.
She had earlier decided not to order take-out food for the third day in a row. So, she ate some milk and cereal before collapsing on her bed and dozing off.
