Ocean Love ~Mermaid Love Story~
============Preface==========
Laura’s P.O.V.
“Laura! Be careful, you could fall into the water and get all wet!” My mother yelled to me from farther up the beach.
“I’m just collecting shells Mom; I promise I won’t go far!” I called back to her, then immediately replaced my eyes on the sand bank.
I was searching for the perfect shell for the top of my sand castle and I could feel it was close by. After a few minutes of searching I spotted something shinny in the water, (btw I know it wasn’t the sun). It was pretty far out so I found a flat rock (one of those huge black ones that are usually at the bottom of cliffs or something) to lie on.
It was a little slippery but I managed to get down on my stomach without slipping or hurting myself. I scooted to the end of it and reached down as far as possible. My fingers barely touched the water, and the shinny thing was about 4 feet lower than that.
I looked at the ocean that stretched out in front of me and my very pretty object that was just out of my reach. I could just jump into the water, get it, and get back to Mom and Dad before they even noticed I was gone.
It sounded like a good idea so I took off my swimsuit cover up and put it on the rock. I inhaled a huge breath and jumped into the waves. The water was cold but not unbearable. I swam back to the surface and refilled my air supply.
I smiled to myself as I thought of what my sandcastle would look like with my sparkly shell on it like a trophy.
I plunged down into the cold abyss and opened my eyes (A.N. I have no idea if you can open your eyes in salt water without it hurting so just go along with it if I am wrong. Thanks), searching for my goal.
I spotted it and made my way to it. It was pretty big and I was having a hard time getting a good grip on it. It was circular, green-is blue, and about the side of the bottom of a plastic water bottle.
I made it to the top of the water when a big wave came crashing down on my head. I was out of air and I started panicking. Kicking and clawing at the water, trying to find the surface.
If I was able, I would be screaming and crying, hoping that some magical force had a reason to keep me alive.
I was getting tired of fighting the current, my lungs aching and chest heaving. I saw the faces of my parents, my friends, my puppy, and anyone else I loved or cared for flash in front of my eyes. It was almost over, the pain almost gone. I smiled, remembering all the fun times with Mom and Dad, Serene, Alice, and Jamie. My eyes closed and I stopped moving, just letting go.
I mentally sighed contently, happy and peacefully waiting for death.
But death did not come. Instead two strong hands clamped around my waist and pulled me up.
When my head broke the surface, I started coughing, my lungs trying to dispel every last bit of the burning salt water that filled my insides.
Once my vision cleared I started looking around. I noticed that the sky had gone from being a beautiful happy blue to a dark, upsetting grey. The hands were still on me, pulling me to the beach. I turned to look at the stranger who somehow saved my life.
It was a boy who looked a lot older than me. Not old as in parent old, or adult old, and not young like me. He was probably a teenager. He had shaggy, past his ear length black hair, and sparkly purple eyes.
He must have saw me looking at him because he smiled at me then lifted my out of the water and placed my on the rock I had been before.
“Thank you for saving me” I said shyly, looking up into his eyes.
He said nothing, just smiled at me one last time before disappearing into the now murky water.
-------
I awoke with a start. That happened on my 5th birthday. Now exactly 12 years later I am still dreaming about the strange man.
I have the same memory/dream every year on my birthday and I see this year’s no different. But, I’ll admit, over the many times I’ve dreamt of that day, my thoughts on the man have changed considerably. He is gorgeous, or maybe was, or could have been. I sigh and shake my head. It is too early to be thinking this much.
I checked my alarm clock which told me it was 4:13 am. Too early to even be awake.
I closed my eyes and put my head back on my pillows. Back to sleep in a matter of moments.
