Brown eyes

It's been about a month since I adopted Honor. She loves to cuddle me under the blankets by the fire. She refuses to sleep unless she is snuggled on me. Her favorite things include swimming, hiking, and hunting.

I decided to explore the forest more today. We trekked beyond our usual hunting grounds. She was pleased when we found the waterfall. The lake was gorgeous. She immediately jumped in. I peeled off my shirt and pants and dove in. Honor swam towards me. She barked happily when I splashed water at her. My girl loves to play.

We swam for a few hours. I was drying up when honor perked up. She took a protective stance in front of me. Then I heard it, branches snapping. Hushed voices. I grab my bow and arrows. I place them in position aiming towards the noise. I've not met anyone in two years. I don't know if they're friendly or not.

"Who's there! Show yourselves! Slowly! I will not hesitate to shoot!"
"We mean no harm! Just searching for prey!"
"I said come out!"

Then I was met with a pair of brown eyes I haven't seen since the day the world ended.

(Flashback)

"So what's the plan?"
"We gather anything that can be used as a weapon. We barricade the school doors. We delay them from entering until we can come up with a more permanent solution. Everyone split up into groups and block off all exits. Get other classes to join."

Calvin grabbed my hand and pulled me aside.

"Lou you've always been smart. Take care of yourself no matter what. Stick with me, ok?"
"Ok."

He kissed my forehead. He seems very tense and on edge. We've barely talked and now he's showing me affection? This really is the end of the world.

Hand in hand we go tell other classes the plan. Our group expands. We now have Makenzie, Liam, and Peyton. Calvin hasn't left my side since we left the classroom. We've armed ourselves with baseball bats from the equipment room. We're currently patrolling the halls and overseeing the different groups. We hear shouting and crashing sounds. Calvin locks eyes with me and squeezes my hand before we all start running in the direction of the sounds. There is about fifteen people trying to hold up the barricades against the zombies that are trying to invade the school. Shit. I'm gonna dye young.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

The doors burst open. Hoards of zombies stream in and attack the students who were holding the door. I'm pulled away and break into a sprint. I'm running hand in hand with Calvin. He's pulling me to run faster. Peyton pulls the fire alarm so that the others know they got in. We rushed up the stairs and into an empty classroom. It's just me and Calvin now. The rest didn't make it. He locks the door as I slide down the wall. I'm can't help the tears streaming down my face.

"Shit Lou. Are you ok?"
"All those people are dead. Killed in front of us. I can't believe it."
"You're in shock. We never expected this to happen when we came to school today. I just watched my friends die. I feel bad too. We can't let it phase us now though we need to fight for our lives."

There's pounding on the door that scared me. I instantly get my bat ready as he carefully opened it. It's Wade, Ezra, and Matheo. I put the bat down. They rush in and Matheo engulfed me in a hug.

"I thought you were dead."
"How is it out there?"
"A bloodbath. Almost everyone is dead or dying.
We barely got away."

I take a step back. The boys look awful. They are covered in blood. They have cuts and scratches all over them. I frown as I think of an escape plan. We can leave as their occupied attacking the other students and risk getting caught or wait and risk being the only people left in a school filled with zombies. Neither sounds good. My thoughts are interrupted by a piercing scream. I flinch as undoubtedly another one of my peers is dying.

"We need to leave. We can't risk staying here. The zombies are busy with the other students. If we stick together I could get us out."
"How?"
"The roof. We get to the roof. From there we jump onto a tree that we climb down. I've done it loads of times to skip school."

I eye Wade. I don't exactly trust him, however this is our best option.

We get our various weapons ready and quietly head out. We follow Wade's lead. We stop at the hall. There are two other directions it cuts out to and one of them has zombies eating a girl at the end. I gag in my mouth. We tip toe pass them as fast as possible. Then we go into the stairwell. We run up the stairs as fast as possible, we don't have much time. Wade leads us to the edge. We climb a later to the first story. There is the tree that he want us to jump onto.

Wade goes first. Ezra tosses him a bat for safety. He goes next. It's just me, Calvin, and Matheo.

"Is now a good time to mention I hate heights?"
"Too bad, Cress. Go."
"How sympathetic of you, Reid."

What is it with boys using last names with people they don't like?Pretty soon I'm the last one. Calvin lands on the ground as the door burst open. Zombies surge forward. I run and jump, barely missing the zombies. Ezra and Matheo catch me. Thank god.

"We need to go now!"

We run as we see zombies coming out of the other side of the school. Wade leads us towards the fence. The zombies are catching up. Ezra and Matheo hit them with bats to keep them away. Calvin hoist me over the fence and throws my bat to me.

"Run Lou! We can't hold them much longer!"

That was the last time I saw those brown eyes.
