There was a lot of soju that night, barbecue, and fried chicken. The streets in the night market of Ssangmun-dong had never been so lively, celebrating the success of their genius prodigy for graduating SNU, and nearly the whole district was invited to drink. Though it was mostly the young folk that took over the nightlife, and if Sang-woo was being drunkenly honest, he couldn't remember these kids' names.
"One more!" One of them shouted, handing the poor bastard a shot glass which he knocked back almost immediately. Everyone cheers for the prodigy of Ssangmun-dong.
"Alright, alright. That's enough!" Seong Gi-hun cuts through the crowd of drunken men, grabbing his best friend by the arms.
"Cho Sang-woo, your mom already asked me to take you home!" He yelled over the noise, though Sang-woo couldn't seem to comprehend anything.
"It's late, Sang-Woo! Your mother is looking for you!" Gi-hun repeats, though to no avail.
He clicks his tongue in frustration, knowing that his friend is far too gone at this point. He grabs hold of his arm and fireman-carries him out of the gathering, with the drunks wailing in protest.
"Oh stop crying, you'll see him again tomorrow!" Gi-hun scolds, dragging him away, though Sang-woo didn't want to go just yet.
Gi-hun groans.
"Come on, Sang-woo. Stop being so hard-headed, let's go!"
"No--" He moans. "Not yet, I'm waiting for someone."
"Well it's late, they can come back tomorrow." Gi-hun huffs. "Let's go."
"Not yet..." Sang-woo groans. "She'll come here, I know she will."
Gi-hun sighs, partially giving up as his best friend falls face-flat on the table. The rest of the drunken men cheer at Gi-hun's defeat.
"It's late and she's probably been busy, Sang-woo." He tries to explain desperately. "We can contact her once you get home."
Sang-woo just murmurs something incoherent.
"Let's go, man." Gi-hun tries one more time, taking him by the arms again as he tries to support his inebriated friend.
"Stop moving so much--" Gi-hun whines. "Sang-woo, you're going to make me drop you--"
"--Sang-woo?"
Gi-Hun stops in his tracks, and so does Sang-Woo, who managed to sober up by just a bit at the unexpected visitor standing at the end of the street. Hae Young came in hours late, holding a small box in her hands.
"Oh thank God you came." Gi-hun sighs in relief.
"Hae Young..." Sang-Woo murmurs, trying to take a step forward, though he stops. Hae Young approaches them in concern.
"What the hell happened to him?"
"They killed him, that's what." Gi-hun scoffs. "He's not exactly a heavy drinker."
"Hae Young--"
"Y-yeah I'm here, I made it. I'm sorry I'm late." She stammers, though he just repeats her name over and over again.
"Hae Young..."
"What?" She knits her brows together. "What is it?"
"I..." He slurs, trying to finish his sentence though something comes up from the pit of his stomach, and they weren't words of affirmation.
