I was walking through the forest with my little sister Delilah. Our mum sent us to fish for dinner. She was busy with cleaning the house while my dad was tending to the horses.
"Harry look at this!" Delilah yelled to me. I turned around and the sight that greeted me made me scream like a girl.
Delilah was kneeling with a pretty girl about my age with dark brown hair. The girl wasn't what I was afraid of though. They were inspecting a silvery dragon with foot long fangs and sword-sharp talons that could have diced me into bits even though it was still small.
"Delilah Letalis!" I exploded. I didn't care that there was another person there. I was just worried for my sister's safety. And my own. I ran up to her and tried to pull her away but she stood her ground and swatted my hand away.
"Stop," I turned around to find that the girl was staring at us. She had freckles and dark blue eyes.
"You cannot fight. This dragon is very sick. He needs medical attention. One of you go to the nearest town and get an obsidian scalpel."
Who did this girl think she was? Some sort of dragon doctor?
"You can't tell us what to do." I tried to say it bravely but it sounded more like a squeak. Beside me, Delilah snickered.
The girl's eyes flashed dangerously. I could tell that she was not someone to be messed with. But it was too late. She had already gotten up and walked over to us. As quick as lightning, she raised her hand and slapped me across my face. I staggered back and reached up to feel my cheek. It was warm and probably red. I was angry but I knew that I couldn't hit a girl. Delilah choose that time to finally speak.
"Sorry for my brother," she said. "He doesn't do well around people. I'm Delilah Letalis by the way. My brother is Harrison. Who are you?" She said this all very fast and I'm not sure that the girl understood what she was saying.
"My name is Zaeya Mace." She said slowly. "I was just taking a walk here when I came across this dragon. It is sick because somebody shot it in the heart. Dragons are extremely good at healing themselves but the bullet was poisoned and it went into its heart. He will probably only have a few more hours to live. My mother knows how to treat dragons but she is out. She told me that an obsidian scalpel is the only thing that will cut through a dragon's hide. Do you happen to have one?"
In fact I did have one that my dad had gotten me. Delilah knew I had it and she turned around to glare at me. Zaeya looked at us desperately and I knew that she wanted to save this dragon. I didn't really want to help her after she had just hit me but I reluctantly gave in and handed over the scalpel. She handled it gingerly like it might blow up but took it anyway. We walked over to the dragon and as we got closer, he let out a roar.
"Stop!" Zaeya shouted at us. We stopped and I took a few steps back. "This dragon is not calm around you Harrison. I cannot do the surgery with a screaming dragon." She turned to face Delilah and I and said,
"You two must do the surgery without me. I must calm him down. All you have to do is open it's heart and take the bullet out without touching it. It will kill humans almost instantly. The dragon will heal itself after the poison is out." Then she gave me the scalpel and turned and walked swiftly toward the head of the dragon.
"Should we do it?" I whispered to Delilah.
"Yes," she whispered back. "The dragon could die." With that, she took the scalpel from my hands and walked toward the dragon.
The first cut she made healed almost instantly.
"Delilah," I said. "Let me do the surgery while you try to hold the dragon open. It will be much easier."
With that she stepped aside while I cut the dragon opened again.
About an hour later I was washing my hands in a nearby lake with Delilah by my side.
"Thank you for saving me from opening a dragon's heart." she mumbled as she washed her own hands that were covered in dragon slime and blood.
"It's no problem." I replied back. She smiled at me, stood up and began walking back to where Zaeya was talking to Argentum(Delilah named the dragon that after it's silvery scales).
"Thank you for healing Argentum." Zaeya said as soon as we got back. She was stroking his head while he was sleeping.
"Any time!" Delilah said cheerfully. "If you ever need another dragon heart surgeon then just call us! Oh, and Harry?"
"Yes," I said warily. Delilah was scaring me a bit with the way she was smiling.
"Mom is right behind you."
Right then I was more scared then when we met the dragon.
A/N: I wrote that around a year ago and it's not very good :(
