The twins had a hard time moving the bed. Even though it was broken, it was a pain to move. It felt like they were moving bricks. Once it was moved, Rose knew Violet wasn't lying. There was a small trap door that looked like it wasn't touched in years. It was locked shut and was probably meant to never be opened.
"Should we go try to find something heavy to smash it and open it?" Asked Violet. Rose, without hesitation, stepped out of the room to look for something they could smash open the lock with. There was a piece of the ceiling that must have fallen when the house was burnt.
"Could we use this?" Rose asked, picking up the piece of fallen ceiling. Violet didn't care what they used, her curious mind just wanted to see inside.
Both of the twins were eager to know what was hidden behind the small secret door. They spent what felt like hours trying to find something to break the lock. Then it happened. Rose ran around joyfully as she held a rusty hammer in her left hand.
"Shall we give this a try?" Rose asked as they started to sweat from running around. Violet took the hammer before someone got hurt. With a big swing, the lock broke into pieces. Violet threw the hammer to the side and the girls raced to open the small door. When they opened it they couldn't believe their eyes. There layed a book with a dirty black cover. It looked nice but wasn't as exciting as they hoped.
"Are you kidding me? This blows." Violet groaned and pouted on the bed. Rose picked up the book and wiped off the dirt and dust. It looked prettier than before, but it still wasn't anything they expected. Violet peeked over Rose's shoulder through her teary eyes as Rose slowly opened the book.
"It's just blank pages," Rose said, flipping through them. Just then a pen and an envelope fell out onto the wooden tiles. Both the girls went crazy. They were curious to know what was inside the envelope.
Violet snatched it and ripped it open.
"It's all torn up and the writing is faded. I can only make out a few words." Violet told her sister as she squinted her eyes trying to see if that would make her read it better. The only thing the twins could read were:
"You have fo__d my c_rs__ bo_k. If y_u wri_e in it, yo_r w__h wi_l be g_ant_d but there a_e c_on__q_uen_ces. Be c_r__ul! You must destroy it. To do so ...
That's when the page looked hand ripped. Like someone didn't want the rest to be read. Violet disregarded the rules. She didn't care. Rose wanted to follow the old paper, but there was no point because it was nearly impossible to figure out the words so she pocketed it.
They were puzzled about what to write, so they took turns scribbling random requests into the book. The first sentence was about how they were hungry.
Just as Rose finished writing how they wish for a big meal, they smelt something coming from downstairs. It reminded them of Thanksgiving dinner.
"What's that amazing smell?!" Violet asked, imagining what it could be. The twins raced down the old creaking steps and entered the warm kitchen. They couldn't believe their eyes and their hearts were racing out of their chests.
"What is all this? Where did it even come from?" Rose asked questioningly as Violet helped herself to a chicken wing. Rose picked up a delicious-looking slice of pie and examined it.
"Just dig in! We can't afford anything else and certainly can't go home. You're going to starve to death if you don't eat." Violet explained stuffing her face more. Rose knew she had to eat so she bit into the pie she was holding.
"This is amazing!" Rose beamed with a mouthful as she inhaled the rest of her slice. She looked around for more food and there was such a variety. All of it was made perfectly and the sisters ate more and more until they were stuffed. Then, the twins lay on the floor exhausted.
"Wherever that food came from, it was the best. Guess we don't need that wish in the weird book anymore." Violet yawned and crossed out their first request as if it didn't matter.
Rose grasped the book as quickly as she could and scribbled in something she wanted. She wrote down how she desired a comfy bedroom she and her sister could sleep in. Rose twisted her head and Violet had fallen asleep. She smiled and fell asleep on the ground beside her.
