Four's Pov
"Beatrice Prior"
I almost choke. Beatrice Prior? As in Bea? No, it can't be her, because I left to protect her, and she can't be back now, especially now. I see a hand go up in front of me,
"Tris, please." She says.
Tris, it suits her.
"Beatrice? Who names a sixteen year old Beatrice, don't you belong in kindergarten with that name?" Zeke says.
I expected Tris to say something, if she was Bea, but all she does is shrink in her seat, and ignores it. I stare daggers at Zeke, hopefully he'll just leave her alone. My mind wanders off, I can't help but wonder why she didn't respond. If that was me making fun of her she would say some witty comment and shrug it off. But now... She seems insecure, fragile.. Broken.
My eyes convert to Tris, her blond hair looks the same but longer, she's short, and has a skinny figure. She's wearing black leggings, converse, and a black sweatshirt. If only I could see her eyes, maybe it's still the stormy blue grey eyes I vividly remember. As if on cue, she turns around, and our eyes meet for a split second. I recognize her immediately, Bea.
I am so lost in my thoughts I barely hear the bell ring. I grab my belongings and look up to see if I can try to catch Tris but instead of finding her up on her feet I see her on the ground with Christina hovering over her whispering something in her ear. Before I can help she has already left. Anger courses through my veins. My fists are clenched at my sides and my jaw is set in a straight line, if Christina wasn't a girl I would have decked her right in the face.
Grabbing all my stuff, I walk out the door to lunch, and when I do I see a girl with blond hair on the ground with her knees covering her face obviously crying. I crouch down next to her and see her raise her tear struck face to meet mine. It's Tris. Implusively, I sit down next to her but as soon as I do she abruptly stands up with anger clearly written on her face. Her expression softens as she studies me.
"Tobias?"
I sigh, knowing I shouldn't lie to her "Yeah, it is."
Suddenly, she turns around and starts walking away from me.
"Wait!" I catch up to her and grab her arm.
My eyes meet hers, looking for any sign emotion, but all I see is anger and hatred.
"We need to talk."
"No. We don't. You don't understand how it felt like when you left. You don't understand how it felt like being alone. You don't understand the hell my life has been. You left and didn't even give me a warning! So no, I don't want to talk to you." Tris's voice clearly shows hatred, but I know I have to defend myself.
"Hell? Don't say your life was hell. Leaving you was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. I left because I had--"
Her voice interrupts me. It's soft and weak.
"Stop. I meant it when I said I didn't want to talk to you. So just leave me alone and have fun with your life."
I'm left standing outside the cafeteria doors, dumbfounded by what Tris just said.
She walks into the cafeteria, going to sit alone at a table in the corner but to Tris's luck, Zeke shows up.
"Aww, is little Tris crying? Who knew you were that weak."
Surprisingly, she doesn't say anything and just sits down. Zeke starts laughing, and goes to sit down at our table. I go get my lunch and take a glance at Tris, who's only eating an apple. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Peter and his friends stare at Tris, probably talking about her. Moments later, I join my group of friends and hear Zeke and Christina talking about Tris. Involuntary, I start grinding my teeth. Thankfully Marlene has a decent heart and speaks up,
"Oh come on, she can't be that bad, we don't even know her."
Uriah and Will agree with her, but Shauna speaks up,
"Very funny Marlene. She's just a friendless weirdo that has no life," Lynn laughs. Lynn has a pixie cut that slowly begins to grow back to its full brown length. Her golden-brown eyes show a dangerous spark; the rebellious streak within her. The pixie cut and the glint in her eyes may make her look dangerous but her piercings are what drive every boy who likes her to back off.
"Yeah, she probably couldn't even take a punch."
"What about you Four? Surely you don't like her," Zeke says.
"Yeah, yeah whatever. I could care less." I don't think it's safe to talk about me knowing Tris yet, it could risk Marcus finding out. What if Marcus kills her? Her family? Me? What if he breaks her beyond repair? He has the capability of doing many bad things, and if word got to him that Tris was around again...
When lunch is over, we all head to our next class. Through the corner of my eyes, I see Tris at her locker, getting books for her next class. She catches my eye, and walks away. If only I could get five minutes to talk to her. To explain everything--well, almost everything.
