Chapter 17
Electric
NATHAN.
It was now 5 am, and we were both fully awake, but Alex refused to move. We lay there, silently, no one saying a word or moving a muscle. Why we were up so early, I don't know.
I began toying with her hair.
"I still can't believe he did that to me." She whispered, tracing the letters on the print on my shirt. I saw a tear roll slowly down her cheek. "H-he was the first guy I truly l-loved and cared about. He took it for granted and fooled me. I should've known it was too good to be true."
Despite the pang of jealousy I felt, I wrapped my arms tighter around her. "He didn't deserve all those things. Look where you are now. He and those girls are probably broke and pregnant with no future."
"The pain... I can feel it again. The shame."
"Alex, I can't stand seeing you like this, please stop it."
"I can't, Nathan. All this time, I've been dealing with horrible flashbacks and memories. I can't stop going back to the past."
"I'll help you forget him. Please stop this. It's hurting me as much as it is to you."
"It's not that easy to forget, Nath."
"I know how you feel."
I think she noticed the tone of my voice, because she looked up at me suddenly.
"I'm so sorry, I forgot that you have also been through a bad relationship. See that? I'm a terrible person."
She buried her face into my chest.
"You're not," I replied, closing my eyes and taking a deep breath. I tried blocking out scenes from my past. "How did you know? It's okay, I'm over it."
She looked up at me once again, her eyes sad, but bright, in a way. "I have my sources. But really, Nath, we suffer the same problems. I can see it in your eyes. We're both still dwelling in the past."
I sighed, feeling warm tears fill my eyes. I couldn't stop it. The memories of that fateful night was coming back again. "We need saving."
"Then let's save each other."
And then I think I also lost it. I don't even know.
When we both recovered, I finally got the guts to ask her, "Can I hear the story from your side?"
She thought about it, then about a minute later, she spoke up.
"As my mother would probably have said, I was a student who held a lot of promise. I was on top of the world. Straight A's, Science fairs, quiz bees... Now THAT was the life. I was popular in my own way. Then there was this clique, filled with boys and girls who only cared about their looks or their hair. They picked on everyone who ranked higher than them, including me. The girls all targeted me, they were keen on taking me down. I got sick and tired of their shit one day, and I fought back, exposing them to the whole school. They sunk lower, and they stopped for a while. Then one day, I bumped into C-Ch-"
"You don't have to say his name."
"Chrysler," She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "It was the start. I knew it was too good to be true, since he was one of the Alpha boys at my old school. Highly coveted, heartthrob, great student. I didn't know he was working with the clique. Then he took me to this party, where he left me, alone, and where the 'mean girls' of the school forced me to drink alcohol. When I was drunk, he suddenly appeared. He led me to this dark, empty, narrow alleyway, where thugs were waiting for me. There were also the girls, who were videotaping everything. Since I was drunk, I acted all stupid and friendly, I let my guard down. Then they beat me up, and when I was weak enough, they decided to take advantage of me. If I hadn't struggled and kicked half of them in the balls, that would've been a... a..."
