Your eyes shot open as you heard a guttural scream come from across the hall.

You sat up in your bed, rubbing the sleep from your eyes as you quickly made your way to your door. Opening it slowly, the sound of a thump was heard, clearly coming from the room directly across from you that belonged to James.

You had only interacted with James a handful of times since you moved into the tower just a few weeks ago. Tony had introduced you to him as James, though you heard everyone else calling him "Bucky". He didn't correct you when you said his name, so you continued to use it.

You creeped into the hallway, putting your ear to James' door to hear faint crying. Your heart dropped at the sound, sorrow filling your chest at the thought of the soldier in pain.

You knocked on his door lightly, calling out even softer. "James? It's y/n. Are you okay?". There was no response. You were worried, having heard his scream just a few minutes before.

You tried again. "James?".

You hand slowly made its way to the knob on the door, twisting it slowly and surprisingly finding it unlocked.

You opened the door to find it pitch black, and cold. You took a step in, one hand still on the door. You called out quietly. "James, are you okay?"

You could hear sniffling and fast breaths, but still no response.

The light from the hallway was enough for you to make out a lamp in the corner closest to you. You moved over slowly, flicking the switch on, casting a low, warm light through the room and directing your eyes to the bed, taking in what you saw.

James was sat on the floor against his bed frame, head tucked into the knees on his chest, his body trembling and dripping sweat. His shoulders moved quickly with his staggered breaths.

Your eyes widen at the sight of him. A shock ran through you internally, never having seen him in any state like this. You make your way over to him, bending down in front of him so that you were face to face. You speak softly to him.

"James? Can you look at me?" You could hear the shallow, quick breaths that he was pushing into his knees.

He takes a few moments before lifting his head to look at you. Your heart shattered as you saw the panicked look on his face. His chin trembling, face wet from tears, stray hairs sticking to his cheeks. His nose and eyes covered in red hue; his blue eyes hidden by his blown-out pupils. His puffy lips trembled as he saw your heart break for him.

You thought for a moment, not sure how to help or what to do. You remembered the breathing exercises you do when you have anxiety attacks.

"Breathe with me. In.."

You took a deep breath and he mimicked you, his shoulders and chest rising as he took in the air. He held it in, tears running down his cheeks as he closed his eyes.

"..And out".

His quivering lips pursed a bit as he exhaled. He moved his knees to sit crisscross and put his hands on the floor beside him.
