Prologue

Bushes rustled outside a thin paned window of the dark bedroom. The sleeping family stirred but did not wake. Silence. Then after a moment of assurance, the sound of feet shuffling could be heard outside. There were a few raspy murmurs and then the window slightly creaked open. The chandelier in the room reflected the light of the flashlight and lightened the plush carpet. No movements were heard from the family, so they tried their luck. SLAM! They threw the window wide open, shattering glass everywhere. The family awoke with a start and as soon as the situation was observed started screaming for help. The goons that had come in commenced searching the house, and stealing. “Please!” yelled the man, the owner of the mansion. Nobody took notice and continued robbing. With his huge ego, he then announced, “That’s it! I’m calling the police!” The minute he said that, the strangers dropped everything and turned to look at the man who stood proudly heading for the phone. “Oh no, you rich mule…I did not come this far to let you rat us out like this...” The leader of the gang replied walking toward the man. He snatched the phone from the owners grasp and let out a wicked laugh.

The girl in the mother’s arms began crying. As the strangers began heading for the mother and daughter, the man stepped in between them and pushed them away. With a swift move, the goons pulled out knives and the leader took the owner by the neck and said, “Oh I have had enough of you all. No more shall we be stopped because of you all. Too many good deeds...” He said through gritted teeth as he pressed the knife further down his neck. The mother screamed but in vain. “Nobody needs YOU to care for them. From now on, with you gone, we’ll do our night duty with ease. Nice knowing you, Robert.”

The parents were finished. This left the girl, one who wouldn’t take much time. She stared solemnly at her parents who lay still in front of her, except her mother who was still quivering. She noticed the men heading for her daughter and acted quickly. “RUN STEPHANIE!” She yelled, shoving her daughter towards the daughter with every inch of power she had left. “Run dear! Mother and father will be here for you! Save yourself!” Her voice broke, and the room stood silent except Stephanie’s heavy breathing. Then many things happened at once. As Stephanie tried to rush out the door, the thieves all went after her but stumbled over each other. Just before she went out, one managed to slash her arm horribly. But with no consideration to this, Stephanie ran out the house into the dark woods, now as an orphan.
