Frieda Reiss

The girl didn't look like much.

She didn't even look human. If Frieda didn't know any better, she would've thought that she'd laid eyes upon a porcelain doll that merely bore a great resemblance to her beloved cousin. Not a single sliver of emotion marred Elsabeth Reiss's face, despite the macabre events that transpired the night before. Her indigo eyes were dull and glazed over with tears that had yet to fall, showing no sign of life.

Despite her lifeless aura, blood covered nearly every inch of her ivory skin. She was skinny, alarmingly so, with the flesh and muscles of her limbs wrapped tightly around her bones like a thin film. Her tresses of raven hair, so similar to Frieda's own, were wild and untamed, dirtied by the sticky ruby liquid. The circles under her eyes matched those of men thrice her age, making it difficult to see where the girl began and sorrow ended. Elsabeth was broken, a mere husk of the lively girl Frieda had watched grow up. If it wasn't for the slight, barely perceptible tremor in her shoulders, Frieda wouldn't see her for what she was now — a girl who was delicate and small, a thing to be protected. An orphan. The only living proof that Alexander and Liana Reiss ever existed.

Though she had doll-like features, Elsabeth was a living, breathing Eldian. Just like Frieda.

It would be naive to believe life would return to how it was before their family was torn apart, cleaved in two by an unforgivable betrayal, but one thing had remained constant: Frieda would protect Elsabeth.

(She had sworn to do so when she first held Elsabeth as a baby, years ago. Feeling as though the breath had been knocked from her lungs, Frieda had been taken aback by how profoundly she felt connected to the babe's new, precious consciousness. The pink-faced bundle had been so tiny, delicate. Breakable yet perfect. Heart swelling with love, Frieda made a silent vow of protection.)
