R-rrring!
My alarm clock buzzed, without looking I slammed it with my fist, making it stop. I rolled myself out of the thick, purple sheets and onto the ground. I pulled over my Harvard sweatshirt, combed my hair, and headed out.
"Hey, Mia!"
I ran over to the car parked by the curb, inside was Allie, my best friend of 18 years, my whole life.
"Allie.. hey! I haven't seen you in forever"
I got myself into the car, propping my backpack on the floor. I slammed the door shut behind me. She started to drive.
"I know right? One day- such a long time"
A few minutes later, she pulled her 2018 Tucson into a tight spot in front of TJ's, the coffee shop right in our town. Every morning since one of us could drive, we'd gone before school. She'd always get an Iced Caramel Latte with light foam. I always got a Vanilla Chai. It had been our thing since 10th grade, and although it was dumb, we both loved it.
"Welcome to TJ's what can I get for you-"
I looked up from my phone to see the cutest guy I had ever seen in my entire life. Dark brown, somewhat curly hair, brown eyes, he was tall too. My dream guy was standing right infront of me. Of course, I didn't know him, and he didn't know me.
"Um, Allie you go first, I forgot what I wanted-"
"Mia, same thing you always get."
She looked me up and down, and she must have noticed I was mesmerized. She let out a sigh before continuing.
"Yeah, she'll have a medium vanilla chai. And I'll have an Iced Caramel Latte with light foam, and no sugar"
I looked up at her.
"No sugar? Since when?"
"My boyfriend says it's better. All the extra added sugar can lead to heart issues, and even death. He doesn't want me to die young, I guess. I should be thanking him for saving my life"
I rolled my eyes. All she did was talk about how her boyfriend was 'changing her life' because he told her information that everyone else knew except for her. The other day we learned that she didn't know what ice cream was made from.
"Don't be mad just because you don't have a boyfriend"
Was she seriously starting with this already? I was beyond embarrassed, too. She didn't need to tell the entire cafe my relationship status. God know they didn't care. I just wish I could-
"Hey, listen, I don't know you, but I'm single too and it's fine. Your friend is really pretty and I'm sure guys have liked her in the past. Maybe she just hasn't found the right person yet. Neither have I. To be honest, if you were really her friend you wouldn't go out in public announcing her personal information. This is bullshit"
I didn't know what to say. Did my dream guy just stick up for me? He doesn't even know me. I would have done the same thing if I was him when I think about it.
"Now can I finish taking your order?"
Allie paid and we sat down at the corner table, as usual. She talked to me but I didn't answer then she slammed her cup down on the table.
"Where's my thank you?"
"Your thank you? Are you fucking delirious"
"I know you like him. I wanted to point out that you're single so he can maybe, not misspell your name on the cup?"
"That wasn't you just being a bitch?"
"Shockingly, no. I even got him to call you pretty"
I laughed.
"No, that's just my fault for being pretty"
We left about 20 minutes later, I couldn't get him off my mind. I wanted him so bad, but I might never see him again, so why was I so obsessed?
Whatever, I had studies to catch up on, this was dumb.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next day, as usual, we headed over to the coffee shop again. Somehow I wasn't focused on him. Well, that's because Allie had been crying and yelling since she first came to pick me up.
"This is ridiculous... what is wrong with him? He could have just broken up with me if he wanted to see someone else"
"I know. It truly seemed like Jake was a good person."
"Now I'm going to give him sugar, so he has heart issues and dies-"
She smashed her head into the steering wheel and started crying again. Without even looking, she pulled us into a spot.
As we walked into the tall building, there he was again. Standing only a few feet away from me, sitting at a table by himself and earbuds in. He was still working, since he had the apron on, but I guess just taking a break.
He stood up and walked around the edge of the counter, just gently touching the side. His walk was slow, or at least, that's how it was looking to me.
We ordered and sat back down, I decided I wanted to go up and talk to him, I didn't know what to say or how I would do it. I watched him as he pulled the chair back out and sat down. He was about to put his earbuds back in.
"Hi"
He looked down at me from the stool, he smiled.
"Hi"
There was awkward silence, he looked back at me before saying something.
"Oh, and I'm sorry about yesterday," He begans, "Calling you pretty, when I don't even know you. I wasn't thinking."
My heart sank, I wanted to drop onto the cold hard floor. I felt like all life was sucked out of me. If I could already see my face going pale.
"Oh, uh..."
I looked at Allie. I wanted to say something else, and she nodded.
"So..."
