It was the 10th a.m on the 11 November 1918. Two men sat in a bunker near the front lines of the Great War, the armistice between Germany had just been signed a few hours ago. These two men were Japanese but had signed on to fight in the European theatre of World War 1 instead of in the German occupied islands in south east Asia and the pacific. These brave men smoked the cigarettes provided to them by their American comrades celebrating the news of the armistice that would take place in just an hour.
"Hey, Noriyaki! What are you going to do back in Japan?"
"I'm probably going to go sight seeing, I don't have much people waiting for me back home."
"Ah I see, can I come then? My parents died many years back and I don't have a woman so I won't really have anything to look forward to."
"Sure, we'll be together to the very end Fuji."
Out of the blue, a patrolling soldier could be seen running toward the direction of the bunker from 150 meters away, he way waving his hands and shouting something which nobody could hear.
"Did he have too much to drink?" Noriyaki laughed but his expression changed the very next second when the sound of a gun firing could be heard through the air and the man dropped the the ground. Fuji immediately ran to his machine gun post and took aim with his trusty M1917 browning machine gun while Noriyaki loaded his lee enfield with a clip. They took aim in the direction from which the bullet came from but nothing appeared. The few moments that they waited felt like hours, but the familiar pickelhaube on the German helmets which were used to create an aggressive, militaristic image could be seen distinctly like a dirt stain on a white cloth. Fuji opened fire, sending heaps of lead into the oncoming attackers taking down three with the first few shots. There were well over 300 German soldiers but the other machine gun nests helped in reducing the amount of work Fuji had to do.
While firing, he noticed the patrol trooper who had just been shot down was still moving. Without thinking, he ran out of the bunker grabbing a first aid kit on his way out.
"Noriyaki, give me cover fire!"
"Ah shit." Noriyaki hastily threw down his rifle and grabbed the machine gun, gently put his finger around the trigger and squeezed. Meanwhile, Fuji ran into the fray in the direction of the wounded man. Bullets whizzed past him as he knelt down and opened the first aid kit, taking out a bandage and applying pressure to the wound.
"Stay with me man, you will be alright."
A smile of gratitude on the man's face could be seen as if he was thanking Fuji but was too weak to speak.
"I'm gonna save you, all you gotta do is not fall asleep you hear me?"
Fuji threw away the bandage which was soaked with blood and covered the wound with a fresh one before slowly making the harsh journey back to friendly lines. While he dragged the man, two Germans took the opportunity to rush the unarmed Fuji but were gunned down at the last second by Noriyaki. The other allied soldiers saw Fuji attempting to save the man and many ran out of the bunkers to charge the enemy in order to provide a distraction. Fuji took the chance and picked up the man on his shoulders and ran full speed back to the medic tent. Unfortunately, a grenade landed right beside him. Thinking fast, he put down the man, picked up the up grenade and threw it as far away as possible which was only a few meters. A loud explosion ensued, the shrapnel from the grenade flew into his chest but his body armour protected him from most of it. His left eye however, was not as well protected and it flew onto it. Pain seared through his entire face and there was a loud ringing in his ear and before he knew it, he lost consciousness.
