You weren't supposed to talk to them.
The guards. The ones in the red suits with blank shapes on their faces.
Especially not the ones with triangles.
But "not supposed to" had never stopped you before.
You spotted him often-Triangle. Always on patrol near the sleeping quarters or overseeing the cafeteria. He walked like he carried a storm in his chest, precise, stiff, unreadable.
One day, you stared a second too long.
He noticed.
The black mesh of his mask turned toward you, slow, deliberate.
You smiled.
He didn't move.
Didn't look away.
Didn't speak.
Just... watched.
Like he was trying to figure you out. Or trying not to.
After that, it became a game.
You'd pass by, toss a wink or a smirk.
Sometimes you mouthed a hello.
He never responded.
But he always looked.
That was enough.
---
One night, while everyone else was asleep, you snuck to the hallway water station. Quiet. Careful.
Then you heard the soft, sharp clack of boots behind you.
You turned-and there he was.
Triangle.
"Breaking curfew," he said, voice low and slightly robotic from behind the mask. But not unfriendly.
You raised your hands in mock surrender. "Busted."
Silence.
Then: "You're not afraid of me."
"Should I be?"
"Yes."
You leaned against the wall, chin tilted. "But you haven't hurt me."
He was still. "Not yet."
You narrowed your eyes. "Why not?"
He said nothing.
Then his head dipped just slightly-barely noticeable. As if... as if he didn't know either.
You stepped closer.
Close enough to see the mesh of the mask twitch slightly with his breath. "You watch me a lot."
"You're reckless."
