Alright guys and gals, this is my fanfic of The Enemy, by Charlie Higson. I didn't enjoy certain events of the story too much, so I thought: "what would happen if someone changed that?" Anyways, please enjoy the story
The smell of smoke was unbearable, his nostrils burned and ached. The fire had grown too far out of control, causing him to head across the river. However, he wasn't alone. There were thousands of other children, some had cars, some were alone, some were in groups, huddled together, but not him, he was different, he was completely alone, or so he thought, for things were about to change, more so than anyone could imagine. The smell of death, disease, and despair, mixed with the smoke and fire overwhelmed many in the beginning, but not him, he was a survivor, everyone doubted him, nobody thought he'd make it this far, but they were dead now, and he was alive.
He arrived at the bridge, coming from the nearby rooftops and tree canopies, gaining awestruck looks from the children near him. He effortlessly leaped from roofs and trees, from one to another, completely silent, unheard by other children and the diseased, but still seen, nonetheless.
When he hit the ground, gasps and ohs and ahs were exchanged among children close enough to see him, but he only moved forward, becoming lost in the crowd on the bridge. He flipped the hood of his ragged sunset colored, blood-covered cloak over his head, covering his facial features. At one time, it was a hoodie, now missing the sleeves, as well as dropping to the backs of his knees, clearly worn, but sturdy.
He remembered a recent event, where he saved a group of three boys. He hadn't stayed long enough to know what happened. He kept an eye out for them, wondering if they survived long enough to make it here. If they had, he planned on trying to join their group, hopefully, they'd accept, he was awfully lonely, after the loss of... others.
The fire was slowly creeping up towards the bridge, bringing another wave of children, closely followed by a wave of diseased. He knew this would end badly for everyone if the kids allowed the grownup's advance. He knew he should do something, but he didn't want to stick out, that would go against his character. He was quiet, but not shy in the slightest. He was strong, fit, and intelligent, but not cocky or arrogant about it. He stayed in the background, while being on the front lines, he was an assassin, so to speak.
The boy's thoughts were broken when he heard the battle cry of another boy, the boy had a large scar on his face, from his cheek to his lip, all the way to the top of his forehead, he looked dark, menacing, evil, even, but his eyes, they were the eyes of someone that had lost too much, but still cared anyways. Those were the eyes of one of the boys from earlier. He quickly cut through the chaos and pulled two silver glinting objects form his "cloak" pockets, the objects turned out to be a pair of knuckle dusters, blades extending from each side of them. He quickly equipped the weapons, sprinting into the battle between kids and adults. He spotted a group of adults attacking a hooded figure, red hair covering their face. His eyes widened, but shortly after, narrowed, his brows furrowing, a snarl creeping onto his features, a malicious look in his eyes. He didn't hesitate to launch himself into the air, sending his legs into the neck of one of the adults, snapping it in half.
With a crack and a thud, the adult hit the ground, gaining the attention of a few of the adults that were attacking the girl. A glint sparked in his eyes as he went to work. He spun, sending the blades into two separate heads, kicking them, causing the heads to split, dropping two more bodies. He quickly slashed three other adults, and looked at the hooded figure, who just had their shoulder bitten into. Rage bubbled out of the boy, causing him to tackle the culprit of the bite, pummeling it's face in with the silver knuckles on his hands.
He walked to the figure, and put his fingers to their neck, feeling a strong and healthy pulse that was slowly speeding up. A sigh of relief escaped his mouth. He pulled the figure onto his back, their long, red, flowing hair tickling his face.
