The novel "The Evertree" written by Marie Lu is a 2015 novel about four young people who are gifted with powers by their animal partners. The novel uses the characters Rollan, Maya and Shane to portray a knowing ness to reality of human kind. It is set in the time of a big war against good and bad, evil and good humans and animals. In order to stop the evil from spreading the four main characters and the greencloaks have to face the Conqueror's forces.
Marie Lu uses key characters to reveal and understand emotions and decisions that real life people face. A key implemented character in the novel the readers of the novel can relate with is Rollan, they can relate with him because he has learned and developed an understanding of how to deal with loss of family members, new lovers, and old or even new friends. He has learned to deal with the pain and grief of losing those around you that you love and trust. Rollan has also learned how to accept the meaning of true love throughout the novel as he is shown constantly thinking of Meilin and Tarik as his true family that he is no longer able to be with because they have been controlled or taken by the conquerors, and evil characters in the novel. In the novel he gets forced to change to the good side when his colleague Zerif who betrayed him for the king of the apes and evil leader Kovo. Shane was then forced to fight alongside Abeke, Rollan, Conor, Meilin and the greencloaks saving the world. This connects the readers to accept that people can change for the better rather than for someone else's evil duties.
