One year. One long year of suffering. Fighting against... Them. The dead, walking. Eating. Eating the living, destroying all that we know. But I survived, along with my friend Kaci. Mum and dad, though, didn't live for more than three months. I'm the last living thing in this hell hole of a world.

I load my gun and look back towards Kaci. She nods, giving me the all clear to go in. I knock, no sound comes from inside. I knock harder and a bang comes from upstairs. We look up just as a walker flies out from a shattered window. "Ah!" Kaci screeches as it almost lands a foot away, snapping it's jaws and reaching for her. It was an old one, the skin decaying horribly, making me wrinkle my nose in disgust. It doesn't hurt to moisturise right? I walk to it pulling a knife from my boot and shoving it half way through it's skull. I smiled, happy it was only one, but happiness never lasts long, does it? "Uh, turn around!" Kaci yells, her eyes wide with fright.

I turn around quickly, only to find more than a dozen or so zombies slowly closing the distance between us. I mentally counted our ammo, "Not enough ammo, we have to run! I shout, grabbing her by her arm and pulling. "But what about the house?! We haven't even raided it yet!" She yells trying to stay with me. I shake my head, my hair whipping around. "We'll come back later, I don't plan on leaving another house unchecked!" I yelled, kicking a walker in front of me.

We ran longer and I looked behind us. The heard had multiplied and somehow looked closer than ever. "More behind and they're closing in!" Kaci tells me as I give out a small huff. We obviously ran faster and I didn't see the walker laying on the ground. The one that Kaci was headed right for. "Oh my, what?!" She yelled, tripping and landing on it's stomach. The thing moaned and I stopped running, only to watch in horror as it bites into Kaci's shoulder, ripping out a large chunk of flesh. "Ahhh!!" Kaci screamed.

"No!" I roared, shooting the walkers that were nearing us, their bodies dropping like a brick, finishing the ammo with a shot to Kaci's attacker. I grab her and sling her across my back, ignoring the fact that there is a large, sticky amount of blood staining my jacket. I take off running through the woods, losing the pack of man eating... Things.

I rip my way through the trees, the hoards moans and shambling, slipping away from my hearing range. A white country house came into view. I don't hesitate running full speed for it. I kick the rotting door and it opens with a big bang. No crash or noises, meaning there's nothing in here to hurt us. I ran to an old couch to my left and set Kaci on it, trying not to hurt her. I worry, knowing she'll turn soon, but not wanting to end her life prematurely. I pace whilst she groans in pain. We dropped all our supplies at the house and I had no idea how long I was running or where. "Hang in there Kaci, I'm gonna take you upstairs." I say, picking her up slowly.

Every step equalled excruciating pain for her, even when I went slow. ".. Please.. I-It hurts.." Kaci said in-between fits of coughs. Her eyes squeezed shut in pain. I felt like I was going to cry. Turns out I already was.

"I-It's gonna be okay.." I say in-between sniffs. We both knew it wouldn't be, and this truth hurt deeply. I would have to kill her but not while she was still .. Her.. Human. Not now. I just need a little longer, a longer time to prepare but I don't have much time. I found a bedroom with an old, dusty mattress. There was even a moth-eaten blanket. Score! I thought, setting Kaci down and covering her with the blanket. Better than nothing I guess.

"Tell me a story..." Kaci sputters, blood splattering her chin slightly. I think I'm gonna be sick. "Okay. What one?" I ask, trying to suck it up and be strong. It wasn't working to well. "Before.. All this.." She says weakly, more blood painting her chin. I wipe it away, feeling like a mother more than her best friend. I smile, knowing what story she really wanted. When all of this is over and the world becomes.. Alive. I take a deep breath and begin the story.
~~~
I stop the story and it was quiet. I look at Kaci and the tears suddenly start to fall. Her chest would not rise and I couldn't hear a sound coming from her nose or mouth. The skin below her eyes were turning yellow. I reach into my boot, grabbing my knife. I cried, not making any attempt on holding back my tears. As soon as the blade shone in the afternoon sun, a deep moan came from Kaci's lifeless body. Her fingers twitched and I gasped. "N-No." I whispered. Her eyes shot open as if it was on my command. "Rrraagh!" Her body rose, like a cheesy Hollywood movie zombie, and launched at me pinning me on the floor. Her bloody teeth tried to get me but my hand stayed planted on her throat, keeping her chompers away from my tender flesh. My knife slipped away from my grasp, so I ended up needing to reach for it.
It has taken me a good - or bad - minute or so but the knife was finally in my hand. Out of fear and survival instincts, I drove the knife into Kaci's skull, straight to the hilt. Her blood pooled around me, making my clothes go red. I threw the body against the wall, making it sound out a sickening thud. Tears ran down my cheeks, leaving behind salty trails. "No..." I whisper. "No!" I yell, grabbing my hair. I pulled my knees to my chest, wrapped my arms around them and started bawling my eyes out. Like that helped.
"Not again! Why me? God, Kaci. I'm such an idiot!" I scream, squeezing my eyes shut and blocking out the world. I wish I was dead. Ugh.
I stay like that for what seemed like hours, when a door opens from downstairs with a creak. I gasp lightly and crawl to the closet behind me, closing the door into the darkness. Creaky floorboards give away their positions. One was in the kitchen, one was in the living room, probably checking out the blood on the couch that came from Kaci, another in the kitchen and... Crap! One slowly making their way upstairs. Doors open, just a painstakingly (forever-taking) slow as the stairs, one at a time. I hold my breath, knowing these things weren't walkers, they're humans. The people downstairs, their voices being manipulated through the floorboards, making it so I don't know what they are saying.
I look through the closet door shutters, only to make out a small shadow. A guy, or a... Boy? I could make out silhouette of a pistol in his hands. He was looking at Kaci's limp body, with her blood splattered against the wall. A struggle was obvious, as was the giant gash my knife made in her skull. Gruesome, right? I made a small choking sound and the boy whipped his head around towards my direction. I cursed mentally, my hands flying over my mouth. The click of a gun set off warnings in my mind, a giant WARNING, DANGER AHEAD sign flashing in my brain. Will he kill me when he finds me? Maybe he will think I've been bitten? Or even worse, he'll think I'm useless, take my things and leave me to get eaten! My own thoughts scared me to death.
Footsteps came closer to my small, confined area, slowly yet surely. I swallowed the lump in my throat and squeezed my eyes shut. The person stopped and the door slowly creaked open.
A pause hung in the air.
Nothing happened. No shot... Nothing.
I took a deep breath and opened my eyes slowly. It took a moment for my eyes to adjust to the light, but when they did, I was shocked. To be honest, a small, startled squeak erupted my throat.
I was staring right down the barrel of a loaded gun. The holder of this gun was ready to shoot the thing it was pointed go.that thing, just so happens to be me.
