hazel tossed around in her bed, trying to rid her mind of the repetitive thoughts chasing themselves around, forbidding her any sleep. She sighed and pulled the covers aside, climbing out of bed and pulling a sweater on over her pyjamas. She crept outside, the ship was quiet, except for the distant humming of the engine. She passed both Percy and Annabeth’s rooms and felt her throat constrict, Percy’s voice still rung in her mind, his scratched face pleading with Nico, before letting go and falling.
She shook her head and continued walking through the ship, until she reached the steps and climbed up to the deck. The air was crisp and cold and the breeze blew her hair into her face. Her stomach felt settled though; flying was definitely better than sailing.
‘Hey.’ A surprised voice came from behind her.
She turned to see Leo at the helm, fiddling with some of the controls. He was always fiddling with something, she’d noticed. At first it was a little annoying, but she had come to appreciate it as one of his quirks.
‘Do you ever sleep?’ she asked, walking over to him and leaning back against the railing.
‘Sometimes, but someone has to fly the ship. And I mean, Annabeth takes over sometimes, but—’
An awkward silence ensued.
Leo cleared his throat, ‘so what are you doing up anyway?’
‘I couldn’t sleep. Everything just keeps running through my head. I can’t seem to turn it off.’
‘I know the feeling.’
‘Leo, what are we going to do? Percy and Annabeth, how are we going to get them back?’
‘We’ll meet the at the doors, like Percy said. Hey,’ he hesitantly placed a hand on her shoulder. ‘They’ll be okay, if anyone can survive Tartarus then its Percy and Annabeth.’
She smiled, grateful for his comforting words, however ineffective at removing the nagging worry in her mind.
‘Well,’ Leo continued, removing his hand. ‘Them and your brother, how is he by the way?’
‘He’s okay, he just needs rest. He should be better in the morning.’
‘Cool, well we’ll talk about everything in the morning and sort out a plan. We’ll work everything out Hazel, we’ll get them back.’
The determination behind his words, set her worrying at ease a little, enough that she could go to sleep, she thought.
‘Thanks Leo, I’m going to try and get some sleep, I’ll see you in the morning.
