Chapter 6: It's The Simple ThingsRowan POV
Mrs. Green put the timer on and I pulled out my phone to get a bit more info. The topic wasn't really fun, but it was a good question. I quickly scribbled down some psychological affects of showing attraction on my paper then looked to see what Aspen was doing.
While San was fussing about what he didn't know, she had found herself a seat a little farther down the column. She had her legs crossed and the yellow fabric of her dress pulled at her hips. One hand twirled a pencil while the other held her phone. I couldn't see her face, but I could image her slightly furrowed eyebrows.
The people around her talked with each other, but she didn't say a word. She was always so quiet, like Alaska. Yet, her quiet was different. Alaska had a more 'I don't like you, so don't talk to me' quiet, while Aspen's quiet was more thoughtful. Like she was trying to soak in every word and give her best answer. Her eyes also followed every movement someone would make, but in a way that didn't make it awkward or uncomfortable. To know she was looking was actually quite calming. Like a guardian.
"You're totally drooling."
I wiped my mouth quickly then turned to San, "No I'm not!"
San looked at me in disgust, "Yes, you were. You most definitely have a crush on her."
I quickly denied, "No I don't!"
San rolled his eyes and straightened his glasses, "Yeah, whatever. I don't blame you. She's pretty cute. But, I think I've heard her name around." He scratched his chin before looking up something on his phone, "Oh yeah, look!"
He showed me a picture of Aspen in pottery class yesterday. Her head was tilted down and she seemed to be in the middle of a sigh. The post had two-thousand five-hundred likes and one-thousand two-hundred comments. The caption read: Guess what y'all? The homophobic girl is in my class. She's even uglier up close. I gave San a sharp side look, "What the hell is this?"
He put his hands up in mock surrender, "Don't look at me like that. I just happened to be scrolling threw Instagram and found this. One of Amari's friends posted it."
Amari again? Seems like I've been hearing more negative than positive about her lately. Jackson had been dating her for a year already, yet she never spoke with me or Alaska much. The only time we really saw her was when she caught a ride with us, and that was a rare occurrence. Jackson spoke fairly well about her, unless she was mad or upset about something, which she was forty-five percent of the time if I'm being honest. But I couldn't really say I knew her. It was more of a I knew of her.
The timer dinged and Mrs. Green announced, "Alright! Two minutes is over. Get into your groups."
I rose from my desk and grabbed my paper. I pointed to San then to the post on his phone, "Save that. I'll message you on Insta' later. You're coming to auditions today, right?"
He thumbs upped me, "You betcha."
I returned the hand gesture, "Then I'll see you after school."
I headed towards the middle right of the classroom. I searched to find Aspen, surprised to find her to the middle left group. She seemed to be very conservative. Who woulda thought she was actually somewhat in favor of PDA. I had been starting at her for a bit to long, so when my eyes met hers I smiled and waved at her to make it less awkward. She casts her eyes away from mine before doing a small wave. When she put her hand down it fiddled with the other one. A cute action I had noticed her do often.
