In the middle of the room, all four of them sat in a circle, though all eyes landed on Deok-su. It was evident that he was the odd one out here. "You fuckers," he spat. "You really think you're going to outnumber me at this point? Three against one?" He scoffs. "Well you're the ones in a dilemma here." He turns to Hae Young.
"Who's going to be your sacrificial lamb now?" He chuckles menacingly. Sang-Woo stares down the man as a warning though it did little to deter him. They all checked the digital timer that was counting down, having less than eight minutes to decide on their partner.
Hae Young sighs. "We don't even know what the next game will be."
"What if it was like the marbles?" Sae-byeok says grimly, as everyone looks down in silence except for Deok-su who only seemed to laugh.
"Unlikely. It is as if they're subverting our expectations." Sang-Woo says. "Or in this case, if they really are, then it could also be exactly like the marble game..."
Mind games after mind games, each instruction is a manipulated tactic to get them to kill each other off in the process.
"What if it's like a race?" Sae-byeok says. "Like the stepping stones."
"Wheelbarrow race?"
"A wheelbarrow race to the extremes--"
Hae Young thought for a moment, mind wandering for the possibilities of the game to the room around them. "Isn't it odd," She started "How we were told to choose groups in the game room. That's where they prepared everything for us before the game."
"Does it make a difference?" Deok-su gestures to her with his chin. "What if they just kept us here because it doesn't really matter. You're going to die either way."
Sang-Woo ignores him, adding his own thought to the matter, "Well, they brought us to the game room, and the game room only led to three rooms."
Their breath hitches at the realization.
"Tug of war, the marble game, and then the stepping stones."
"So it's an entirely new game with an entirely new room, just as always." Sae-byeok shrugs. "What does it have to do with the people we choose to be with?"
"For once, you're speaking something sensible." Deok-su laughs cynically. "It's evident that I'm the odd one out here, so it doesn't matter if I choose someone to be my partner right? Because would you choose me, huh? You little shit." He turns to Sae-byeok, who doesn't react to his taunts.
"Or you? You're smart, aren't you?" He turns to Sang-Woo. "Making wise decisions and shit. That's why you're still up and running in this game."
"And you..." He finally turns to Hae Young. "The one that surprised me the most."
He gives her a threatening gin.
"Smart and strong." He says. "And hidden behind that facade of yours. No one would have really expected you to have gone this far in hindsight." His eyes then trail to the wound on her leg, his gaze calculating and predatory. "And it's only now that you've got a weakness, am I right?"
She returns to him an equally menacing gaze, withstanding his without the nerve to back down. She isn't afraid of him, no matter what he says he can do or will do. He was bigger, stronger, more dangerous than Hae Young will ever be, but to her, he will always be just a man.
Deok-su scoffs, breaking his gaze as he finally stands up from his spot.
"Clearly, this isn't my posse." He says with an overtly fake demeanor. "Because I killed them all. That's why I fucking made it this far."
He looks at all three of them collectively from his stance, looking down as if he had power. But to them, he just looked fucking ridiculous.
"And I thought that's what you fuckers would learn by now, that there is no winning this game without sacrifices." He smirks, then turns on his heels walking by his bed. "Approach me when one of you have finally decided to make me your sacrificial lamb." He says nonchalantly. He had always been the wolf that gulfed down entire nations of men and lamb. From the first game to the last; ruthless, shameless, and without fear. He should be fearful, but not to those three who merely saw him as competition and as a hindrance to their victory. He was nothing to them.
As he left, all three faced each other with looks of silent worry and hesitance. This was going to be a lot tougher than they had thought.
