Layla, play with Kaizer for awhile...
I turn around to face the voice. My mother's voice... I saw her silhouette walking away and a car driving crazily towards her. I tried running after her but a hand grabbed me, stopping me from my tracks. So instead, I shouted after her.
No, Mom! Don't go there! Come back! Mommy!
The ear-splitting sound of the car's engine alerted my mother and she saw the car but it was all too late.
I have to tell her. Mommy, listen to my voice!
I pushed the person grabbing my hand and started running. Everything happened in slow motion. And instead of a hand stopping me, time made it impossible for me to go further to my mother. I watched my mother in her last moments.
Mommy...
She turned around to face me and for a split second, I saw dread, panic, fear and unshed tears. She looked as if she was about to cry. But then, what I saw stopped my heart from beating. She smiled at me. The kindest, loving smile.
Layla, I love you. Now, close your eyes.
Her mouth moved to say those words to me. And as a single stray of tear escaped from her eyes, I closed my eyes shut, crying softly as I heard death fall upon my loving mom.
BAM!
I opened my eyes and my mother was gone. I ran towards the accident and saw red. Blood. I followed the trail and it led me to my mother. I kneeled beside her unmoving body. I cried and screamed till I ran out of tears. More and more people gathered. An ambulance was called over but it was all too late. I looked at my mom's face and moved my mouth to say something. But no voice came out. I bit my lip, regretting the fact that I couldn't say those 3 special words to my mom.
I love you, Mommy.
The world was slowly turning black and a hand rested on my shoulder. I looked up to see Kaizer crying. He kneeled down to hug me and I closed my eyes in his embrace. The shouts surrounding us slowly faded to silence and all I could hear was Kaizer's words to me.
I'm here. I'll always be here, bestfriend.
I smiled. I wanted to say thank you but again, my voice failed me. With my eyes already closed, I passed out, thinking of the nightmare I just witnessed. I wanted to wake up from it. And so I did. Literally. With a book slamming on top of my study table and a shout of anger coming from my professor's lips. Who wouldn't wake up from that?
"Layla Xyrene Steele! You'll be having detention for sleeping in my class, young lady."
