My first one-shot! Takes place after Ahsoka and Rex bury their fellow soldiers (Victory and Death). I'll gladly take any suggestions for future one-shots!

Update (6/19/2023): I did a little rewrite of this one-shot, mostly to change it from 1st person to 3rd.

They had made camp where they landed, after . . . no, Ahsoka couldn't bear to think about it. Not yet.

Somehow, she had fallen asleep, despite everything. She had hoped for a dreamless sleep, if sleep would come.

Ahsoka was disappointed.

Memories overwhelmed her, good and bad. The triumphs, and the failures.

She saw her master, troopers from the 501st, enemies, and friends. The 332nd lined up, their helmets painted as a sign of loyalty and admiration. Anakin again, looking back at her for the last time. Her conversation with Maul played back as well.

Then, Ahsoka felt the pain around the galaxy as the Jedi were betrayed, seconds after she told her closest friend how much he meant to her.

The short time when he was no longer a friend, but an enemy, haunted her. All alone, she had very nearly died at his hands.

The memories quickened, coming in flashes.

The removal of Rex's chip.

The two of them against everyone else.

Escaping the cruiser and burying their brothers, one by one.

Above it all, she could still hear Anakin's chilling words, "What have I done?"

Ahsoka woke with a gasp, launching upright. Tears she could hardly feel streamed down her cheeks as she stared at her shaking hands.

Right away, she knew she didn't want to be alone. She couldn't be alone, not anymore.

She slowly stood up and started heading toward the only friend she had left. Upon reaching him, she discovered he was asleep.

Guilt bloomed in her chest. Rex had to be taking this even harder than she was, and it was hardly fair to deprive him of the short relief he may find in sleep. The relief she had failed to.

Why should Ahsoka wake him? She had broken down once already, right after dropping her sabers before the graves. And his comfort was the only reason she had stayed together.

With a shake of her head, Ahsoka turned to move back to her sleeping roll. A voice halted her.

"Ahsoka?"

"I'm sorry I woke you," she said immediately, wincing at the break in her voice.

"Don't worry, I wasn't asleep."

She hesitantly turned to face him.

"Are you okay?"

"I'm alright."

Rex didn't believe her, she could tell.

"I should be asking if you're okay," Ahsoka replied.

He hesitated. "I think we both know the answer to that, little 'un." Under different circumstances, the use of her old nickname would've brought a smile to her face. Now, it only brought tears.

Willing her voice to stay steady, she sighed. "I couldn't sleep. I was wondering if I could . . . stay over here. I'm tired of being alone." Her voice caught on the last word, and heat rose to her cheeks as she realized how childish the request sounded.

But he smiled, as much as he was able, and motioned her over. Ahsoka sat next to him, further feeling like a child as his arm came around her shoulders.

They hadn't talked about everything, not really. And one thing came to the forefront of her mind. Maul's escape had caused this destruction. This death. And who had let him out? Her.

"I'm so sorry," she whispered. "If I hadn't let Maul out--"

"Don't you dare blame yourself for this, Ahsoka," he interrupted. "You were alone, what else could you do? Every one of us was fooled. No one could have predicted this would happen. Not the Jedi, not the Senate. It wasn't your fault."

She sighed again. He didn't blame her. She hadn't admitted it, not even to herself, but the had been one of her biggest fears.

A bit of the pressure was raised from her chest.

Ahsoka didn't realize she was crying until he tightened his arm around her. "You okay?"

"For now, yes." Even if her heart hurt enough to burst whenever she thought about Anakin, Obi-Wan, Plo Koon, or any of the other Jedi and clones, she was alright for now. In this small moment, with her friend.

The next few minutes passed in silence, a comforting silence, until her eyelids grew heavy.

She hadn't noticed she'd started to drift off until Rex gently helped her lay down. He squeezed her shoulder one last time before joining her.

Ahsoka considered herself incredibly lucky for having a friend like Rex.
