Wen Kexing had trouble sleeping yesterday; eventhough he was exhausted from yesterday's long, dreary night. His lips were dry, and he had cried so much that even tears couldn't come out from his eyes anymore. He buried his face on the pillow and sobbed; wanting to rip and tear his own body into pieces, and burn himself to death to end this lowly, humiliating little life of his.
He blamed himself for not being a more capable man. If he had learned how to fight for himself before, things wouldn't have escalated to this point. He gave his virginity to a man that he had just met days before. He didn't even know who he was, and he didn't want to know anyway. The hysterical and painful sobbings of his were enough to melt pure gold.
Hong Lu; the little maid who served him since the first day he got into the palace, asked him out of sympathy. "Concubine Wen... did anyone angered you..." she paused, then slapped her mouth. "D-did General Zhou..." she couldn't finish her words.
Wen Kexing didn't say anything.
But Hong Lu immediately brightened up. "Concubine Wen, if this servant is not wrong, today is the official awarding day for the palace women.. Since Concubine Wen is married with General Zhou, then he will surely be invited to the ceremony too!"
"Just do whatever you want. I'm not going there." Wen Kexing's voice was shaky. He finally got up from the bed and adjusted his robes. "I want to take a walk outside."
"Then let this servant accompany you."
They walked into the royal garden. The sun was shining a ray of brightness and warmth; with the sounds of orioles chirping. The gentle wind blew the tree leaves, making them rustle. Fish were splashing from the sparkling lotus ponds in the daylight; the view in the palace was indeed praiseworthy. The peaceful moment were calming down his rattling nerves right now. Hong Lu, who was walking behind him with an umbrella on her hands to protect him from the sunlight, fastened her pace. He seemed to be walking farther and farther away from her.
Then, a figure caught his eye from the whole place. He was standing on the stone bridge between the lotus pond; and this person wasn't an ordinary person to him to do so; he could immediately tell that this person was a "beauty" by those pair of amazing shoulder blades. But he wasn't interested in him; and quickly turned away in an attempt to walk away from him.
Hong Lu finally caught up with him, and panted. "C-Concubine Wen!"
Hearing that name, the person who was standing on the stone bridge feeding the fish turned to look at the person he had been waiting for all morning. Wen Kexing stopped dead in his tracks. That dumb Hong Lu, why now?!
But instead of walking to his side, Zhou Zishu commanded without a care. "A-Xing, come here."
Wen Kexing's ears twitched. Did he just call him A-Xing? He was highly offended by that; only people who were special to him could call him that name. But since he asked that for himself; he held his breath and stomped his feet to the other side of the bridge.
Hong Lu retreated to the maids' quarter, since she had nothing else to do there.
"Zhang fu." Wen Kexing bowed politely. He had learned palace etiquettes since when he was a child, because scholars are meant to know everything. "Why are you looking for me today?" He asked "sweetly."
"Why did you turn away when you saw me?" Zhou Zishu asked while throwing a fish pellet to the water. "Are you... scared of me?"
Wen Kexing smiled. "Of course not. How can a wife be scared of his own husband?"
"You're definitely lying through your teeth right now..."
Wen Kexing tried to remain calm. "Eventhough Zhao fu could be tough sometimes, but this wife knows, you're a tough person on the outside but has a soft heart on the inside."
"Did you have fun last night?"
"....."
Wen Kexing wanted to hang himself right there just then. A man, asked him that dirty question in broad daylight! He nodded glumly. ".... Yes."
The fish pellets on Zhou Zishu's little container on his hand were empty now. He sighed, then shoved it on his breast pocket, and turned to face his wife. It was obvious. He had been crying the whole night; even his robes were wet. Wen Kexing lowered his head, not knowing what to do next.
The next thing he knew, Zhou Zishu took off his outer robes and wore it gently on his wife. "Take care of yourself these days. I'll be going somewhere tomorrow."
"You're going to the wars again?"
Zhou Zishu smiled. "You're finally worried for me now?"
Wen Kexing quickly realized what had just came out from his mouth and kept his mouth shut. Zhou Zishu was still smiling from ear to ear.
"You look pretty when you're flustered like that."
"You... don't try to flirt with me!" Wen Kexing's ears and cheeks were starting to get red. "Go to the wars and die out there! I don't want to see you ever again!"
Then he ran away from him and got back into his room.
Zhou Zishu smiled, knowing that his wife had at least developed a bit of affection to him.
LMAO THE AUTHOR DOESN'T THINK THAT THE TITLE OF THIS FANFIC SUITS THE STORY ANYMORE
