The blood, oh the blood. A thick crimson flow of what used to be life was now dripping from my sore hands. Not a sound could be heard from anywhere around me, making my chilling reality much more horrifying. My ears rang from the screams and wales that echoed from the tall, dark pines just moments ago. What did I do? There had to be someone or something else to blame for this insane act. Did I...kill someone?
I repeated this in my head as if a sudden answer would ease my now crippling anxieties. If they came walking through the misty brush in front of me, I would tell them that she had tried to kill me first. I quickly realized that the knife was still in my tight fist. I quickly released my grip- sending the sharp blade to the wet forest floor. If they came without warning, maybe they would feel pity, come to the miraculous conclusion that a young boy like me would not be capable of such a crime. Perhaps if I were luckier, I would suddenly rise from my old soft bed and realize that this was nothing more than a chilling nightmare.
A potent mix of cedar and iron swirled in the muggy air around me, and I then became aware of the low hum of the thick blood coursing from her lifeless body at my feet. I am going to be sick.
All at once, a more human and normal impulse crept it's way up my throat and I could no longer resist the urge to projectile vomit onto the nearest tree. How could this have happened? Surely I wasn't the one who ended this young girl's life. There was a sickness that suddenly took over her weak body, then she fainted. Hit her head on a nearby rock, her neck splintered by a dried root. But the gashes were far too big to be a simple splinter, the air far too humid to leave anything dry.
Turning over more conflicting possibilities, I became increasingly angry as the logical part of me said that no one in their right mind would believe such a story. I began to search the creative corners of my mind in a panicked attempt to deflect the life-altering event that had just taken place. The deeper I dug for a solution in my head, the louder her wales became, echoing between my ears. Images of her thrashing, shivering body flashed through my mind as quickly as they came.
Falling limply to the lush, wet ground and bringing my bloody fingertips to my cold lips, I attempted to stop myself from crying out loud. Everything was replaying in my mind like a broken record, every thrash, and every slash. Every kick and every muffled scream became louder than the last. A sudden blink of my heavy eyelids and the movie in my head ended with the present image of her still-warm, lifeless body sprawled in front of me.
To be continued...
