A fine day for a walk

The steady rain softly tapping against the window nearest to your bed was the first thing you heard as you woke up. Begrudgingly, you pried open your eyes to the blinding white overcast light pouring through your window, and spilling over everything it touches.

With a big stretch and a wide yawn, you sat up and rubbed your tired eyes. As soon as your feet hit the floor they are numbed by the cold damp chill creeping about the room. Your fireplace flames had dwindled to embers, leaving you susceptible to the cold.

Getting dressed as quickly as you can, you slip out of your room and begin your daily chores. Once the animals are all fed and watered, you started on the house work. Sweeping and scrubbing the floors, clearing away any rotten food remains, and on to baking bread. You had to keep an eye on the time, as you were invited to join Ross and Demelza Poldark down at the mines to help with any above ground duties that needed attending to and had promised Demelza that you would help her prepare lunch for the workers.

A few hours pass by and the raining had eased, much to your relief as you embarked on your walk to Nampara. It was not a strenuous journey but seeing as you wanted to give your horse a break after a few days worth of working it hard to go to and fro, you decided that going on foot would be a fine option.

Little did you know that due to the rain- the ground had become quite marshy. The further you trekked onward towards your destination the thicker and deeper the mud became. You trudged on all the same, each step struggling more and more to pull up your foot from the suction of the mud. It continued this way until you found yourself nearly unable to wretch your foot from the mud.

You huffed in frustration as you kept trying to break free. At last you yanked your leg up hard enough to get it out, and along with that you felt an instant throbbing in your ankle.

"Really?" you muttered exasperatedly under your breath.

Carefully, you tested putting your weight on your sore foot. It was definitely uncomfortable, but you could manage to walk on it. At least you were determined to, you couldn't just stay here. With all due haste, you took the slightly longer way around the grounds to walk on the dryer parts of grass you could find to make finally arrive at Nampara.

"Well now, what happened to you?" Demelza inquired when she opened the door.

"I decided to walk on foot after it rained," you sighed, looking down to see that mud was splattered all over the bottom of your skirt.

She stepped outside and closed the door, "May I ask- why did you not take your horse?" she said concerned,  coaxing you to follow her to the water pump with a bucket.

"I wanted to give him some time to rest, since I had been using him day in and day out the past few days for errands," you replied.

"Ah," she nodded, "t'is perhaps not the best of times to do so but I understand your reasoning in the first place."

Demelza begins to pump water into the bucket, then proceeds to hand it to you with a brush, "For your boots, they must be covered with muck I suspect. I'm sure you'd not like for it to harden."

"Yes, thank you," you set the bucket down on the ground and lift the bottom of your skirt. Her suspicions were correct, you had a thick film of sludge covering your black boots. Dunking the brush into the cold water, you began to scrub your boots meticulously to ensure you had not left any residue behind. After you used the rest of the remaining water to rinse your boots, you shook off the beads of water and went to join Demelza and Prudie in the kitchen.

The three of you chatted as you prepared a manner of bread, pies accompanied by some cheese and apples. While you assisted, you could feel the aching pain in your ankle increasing the longer you stood. Though you did not say anything regarding this matter, Demelza did notice the expressions of discomfort you displayed.
