Chapter 22 | Kenzie

What is going on?
I'm suddenly startled by a banging noise coming from down the hall. I step up to my door, and place my ear against it.
The knocking stops. I hope whoever it is isn't locked out of their room...
I walk back over to my bed, and lie down. Eventually, I drift off to sleep.
I wake up in a house. I've never been here before. I stand up, and look into what seems to be the living room. I see Lily, Thomas, Minho, Melissa, Gally, Sonya, and Harriet. Where's Newt? I turn my head, and he's right next to me. He smiles down at me, and places a hand on my hip.
I'll never be this happy...
I don't know where the thought came from, but it's true. It's only a dream...
I wake up.
The firing has stopped. I lay still for a minute, when I hear my doorknob move. I sit straight up, and wait for the arrival of the intruder. "Kenzie!" The door swings open, and I'm blinded by the light. "Did you not here the announcement? Come on!" It's only Lily.
"What? How long ago?" I ask as I follow close on her heels.
"Like five minutes. I didn't see you in line for the elevator."
"They really need a second one..."
"I know, right?" She smirks over her shoulder at me. She's always so happy. I want to be more like her.
We stand in the elevator with a few male Gladers that I don't know.
"My names' Aris," a relatively small one says.
"Kenzie," I reply, only glancing at him for a second, then turning back to the elevator door.
"Yeah, I know."
I ignore his creepy comment. It's only until now that I realize that the emergency lights are still blinking red. There's no alarm, though. Thank goodness.
We arrive in the meeting room only minutes later. The lights are normal here. No annoying red flashes to distract me from...whatever is about to happen. All of the Gladers and WICKED employers pile in one after another. Me and Lily get separated. I don't get a chance to even think about Newt before I am forced to a seat beside Isabella. She was friends with Beth in the Maze.
Ew... I still remember the light leaving Rachel's eyes. I expected it from Beth, though. She went all crazy towards the end. Was that even her? Could it have been WICKED? My thoughts are drained out by the sound of Ava's voice in the microphrone.
"Can I please have your attention?" She has to repeat herself a few times before anyone complies. And it takes a few minutes for the hundreds of people to actually quiet down.
What she announces next is stunning. In a way, even horrifying.
