A thunderous jab to my face woke me up immediately as I flew across the room. My senses were on alert more than ever at the attack which tore me from my sleep, making me instinctively jump to my feet in a defensive stance.
And I held my fists in front of me for a second until my shoulders fell with a sigh at the realisation it was only my grandmother who had chosen violence as today's method to interrupt my nap; at least it was better than yesterday, which was by turning off the apartment's heating until I got so cold to the extent I wouldn't be able to sleep any longer. Her creativity was cruel, yet effective.
"Do you need something, obachan?" I grumbled, still half-asleep.
The shorter woman began by telling me off for sleeping too much during the day. "Anyways, I'd like you to go grocery shopping for me." She handed me a crumpled piece of paper.
Confused, I unfolded it to read a list of vegetables and dairy products. The old hag really just woke me up to run her errands. "Can't you just go get this stuff yourself?"
"Unlike a certain someone, I have things to do today," She said sarcastically. "Since I'm finally back in Japan after so long, I'm going to spend the day at your auntie's house. Ooh, I can't wait to see my lovely grandkids," She swooned over her memories as if I wasn't one of her grandchildren too. But it didn't offend me seeing as my cousins were understandably a lot more pleasant to have around than a grumpy slob like myself.
I took my hoodie off the couch and began putting it on before tightening my jeans and going to the front door to get my shoes. "Alright whatever, I'll go pick these up real quick. Tell Takashi I said hi." The old woman just waved me off as I left the apartment.
And that was how I found myself at the Eleven-Seven store at one o'clock on a weekend afternoon.
It was pretty peaceful; I had my headphones on while picking out the ripest watermelon to put into the shopping basket. Soon, I was done with the shopping and left the store as quickly as I had entered it.
Pulling the headphones down to rest on my shoulders, I peeked inside the white plastic bag to make sure I had everything I needed and smiled particularly when I caught a glimpse of my favourite type of ice lolly in the bag.
A tall, intimidating-looking guy, with blonde hair and a peculiar lion tattoo on the shaved side of his head, bumped into me while I was checking over my reciept. "Hah? Watch where you're standing, bitch."
That was enough to tick me off at the man who walked into me. Swiftly, I turned my head to him and gave him a hard and cold glare. I noticed a ridiculously big group of even more guys, maybe over one-hundred of them, wearing the same red coat that he was, standing behind him. At first I thought it was just a group of wannabes, but the writing on the sleeves of their jackets made me realise they were much more- they were Yokohama's Tenjiku gang.
"What the hell are you looking at?" He rudely yelled once more.
A smaller boy stepped out and stood next to the taller male, looking me up and down as if inspecting an artifact. "Hey Shion, if I'm not wrong, this is the chick from Toman."
The fact they identified me didn't bother me one bit. I didn't have the time nor patience to deal with whatever these jerks were up to. Not wanting to stick around any longer, I turned my back to them and began walking home to where I'd be able to enjoy my lolly in peace. All their calls and insults were still audible while I was making my way down the pavement.
