Alred

The orange light flickers across the dark wall, breaking apart the darkness in the tunnels. Only the echo of my heavy foot steps to break the quietness. My fingers run across the rough wall, sharp, uncut crystals sticking out half Hazzard.
“Well, this should be a open and close report. Havricks, dirty bastards, skimming off more cream than they should.” I mutter to myself, kicking a large rock down the dark tunnel.
This is the fifth quest the Kings sent me on, in the past month. Nothing more then checking on the a bunch of Duke whose father’s were once war hero’s, while they remain, spoiled brats.
Stones crack in the darkness, a whoosh of wings flapping. Pulling my staff off my, the red crystal begins to glow as I push mana within. Two yellow eyes, more then ten feet off the ground, glow from beyond, shrinking as they get closer. Another three pairs appear not far behind the first set.
Pointing my staff forward, a small orb flickers to life. Flames dancing around the orb, a clear jet of air blast it forward. The small craves through the darkness, smashing into the creature. Flames burst lighting up the tunnel, the creature twist in the air, flapping it’s wings to flee the flames.
Flipping my staff upside down, flames emerge, dancing up the staff until it reaches the top forming a blade. Rushing forward, slicing the firey blade through the creature, burnt flesh fill the air around me. The other three launch forward with more speed.
Weaving through them, I whip around, dragging my fire blade through the smallest, cutting it clean in two. The fall to the ground with a wet plop. The larger two arc through the air, turn themselves back toward me. Holding the sword in front of me, dash at the one in front, it vers to the left, my blade cutting through its wing. I snap the blade across the tunnel, catching the second one in the face, burning and cutting through. It flops to the ground, twisting, a weak howl as it beats its wings.
Pulling a small dagger from my belt, I reach down pinning the creature to the ground, running my blade into its heart, no point in letting it stuffer. I turn to see the other one has long fled into the darkness. With a flick of my worst, the flame blade dissolves returning to my staff.
Holding the light over the deformed creature, I can see it’s a wolf-bat. Small ones too, black leather like wings and body of a small wolf, no more then fifteen pounds at their heaviest.
“That probably all the excitement I’m gonna get in this mine, better head back to the King and file my report.” I mumble while I shove a piece of jerky in my mount. The salty smoke flavor filling my mouth with drool, at least this taste good.
The patter of my boots echo, although each step crunches under the rough gravel. I hours spent here nothing more than a waste of time. This is not the work I was trained for. No, my grandfather trained me since I could walk to be a fighter. All this baby sitting and checking in, ugh, I’d rather shovel shit.
Bright light burns through the darkness. Lighting up the end of the tunnel. Picking my pace up, just a days ride and I’ll be back for training at least.
Blinking like a mad man with tears dripping down my face. I lock them close, slowly open so they can adjust. The beaten of hooves race across the gravel road, I believe for my horse. Pulling the red crystal from my staff, the sliding in a dark brown one.
Reaching for the horse, ripping the reins free, I twist pushing myself to get ready to launch into the saddle. The old chestnut nickers then steps a little farther away. I glare at his one large eye. Adjusting myself, I catch a blur striking above us, a handful of arrows rain down towards us.
The brown crystal lights up. Earth spikes rip from the ground, smashing into each arrow. The last arrow cuts through the earth spike, sticking into the old chestnuts head. The horse falls limp to the ground.
My heart rattles against my chest. I peer past the my fallen horse, around the bend comes a squad of knights. In full suits of armor, every their horses have armor.
Thrusting my staff forward, picking it up, slamming it into the ground. The brown crystal explodes. The ground ripples towards the knights, throwing boulders into the air. The knights try to turn their horses away, but aren’t fast enough. The ground suggests under them, tossing them through the air.
“I can’t wait here.” My voice freaks a little, cracking. I hurry and dig through my pack the only thing not crushed happens to be my last earth crystal. My fingers fumble with the crystal as I try to slide it in.
Jumping over my dead horse racing for one of the fallen knights horses. It’s reins are tangled in a bush, I shove my hand into the bush, ripping the reins out. The horse rears back, trying to pull away. Staining my arms to pull the beast back down, I catch a glimpse flash out if the corner of my eye.
Snapping my eyes towards the flash, a huge fire-ball racing towards us. I drop the reins, jump into the bush, pushing myself as fast as I can through it. Pulling my self up the hill above the mine, the ground shakes ever so slightly. The rumbles of something large giving chase.
Turn back, looking over the bush, it comes into view, my freezes in place as my eyes lock with the beast across the way.
It’s dark brown skin, smooth with only some bumps across its sides. It’s long face with scales overlapping like plates of armor. It’s two large yellow eyes glare at me, whiles large purple tongue flicks about.
“Screw me, a drake.” I curse.
“CHARGE!” A gruff voice screams from its back.
I high tail it over the mines entrance. The lump in the ground, only fifteen high as they had dug down at an angle. Jumping from the half way down, smashing my way through another bush. Making my way through, the main road from the Capital to the Havricks Manor.
There is no way I’m gonna be able to out race a drake on foot. My eye wander across the road, a dark forest looms not to far away. If I can make it to the trees, then all I have to do is get to Ivory-wall. My heart beats hard against my chest, the pumping of my blood making me feel alive.
A massive roars rips out from behind me. Not bothering to turn and look, I already know it’s a dam drake. I lower my head running as fast as my feet will push me for the tall dark forest ahead of me.
The tall grass tangles around each foot as I try to reach the grace. The fear wrapping itself around me, I feel my head turn and gaze at the drake is getting closer. The thumping in my chest stops, my mouth dries like a noon in the Zakmo desert.
The drake smashes it way towards me, each step leaving an imprint in the ground. It’s riders arms dancing like a chickens wings. I can’t tell if the rider has black skin, or is black leather. A familiar feeling washes over me, like I know this person.
The next step jars me a bit, they are within twenty feet. The drakes large maw open as wide as it can. My body still frozen in place.
‘What in the hell are you doing, boy?’ A grizzly voice rings through my head, a single tear rolls down my cheek.
My arm raises, the brown crystal glows, I can feel the drain of mana leaving my body. The shifts in front of the drake, it tries to jump. Giant vines form, launching from the ground, the wrap around the drake. Pulling hard, it slams into the ground with a large quake.
I don’t stop to wait for the dust to clear away, I dart for the trees, hoping to put much needed distance between my chaser and myself. I’m not sure who this Tamer is, but he must be working for the Havricks. How did they afford one with a drake?
It doesn’t matter, the Havricks are planning something and I don’t know what it is but I know I have to report to the King. My heart is still racing. The excitement of the day took a better turn. This is what a mages life should be like, Now if only I could find a dragon.
