 “Amren!”

 “Amren!”

The  gravelly voice of Miss Smith, who called me by name, unmistakable, of course, had woken me from my dreams.

From the dream. Literally. I was just dreaming of something wonderful! And, right now, I had to be woken up... I was disappointed.

I rose to my feet on the bed, and arranged my clothes. My hair was tangled, but with a sigh, I tried to direct all my attention to the witch in front of me.

“Someone is interested in seeing you!”

I looked straight ahead, and tried to mask my emotion of amazement mixed with happiness, and to seem as indifferent as possible. When, in fact, the most colorful emotions were growing in me.

“What?! Anyone want to see me?!” that thought screamed in me.

I dreamed again and again what it would have been like if my childhood was happy in this orphanage forgotten by the world, which only "shadowed" the face of the earth - as others would say.

But today came the decisive day to leave this place, which for so long offered me a roof over my head.

“The only one I will miss will be Marcus.”, I said to myself.

This boy who, most of the time, offered me support in this island of indifference and cruelty. The only one I won't miss is Ms. Smith, the director of this orphanage. From the bottom of my heart!

And who was Marcus, after all? A good question.

“You're not kidding, are you? Miss Smith?” my voice trembled.

“Do you think I feel like playing games, girl?”

A little more, and her energy would explode and overwhelm me.

“Do well, and go get ready to look exemplary! When you're done, go down to my office. Be as fast as possible, so even the possible adoptive family will leave before they have the 'honor' to meet you!”

And, she disappeared from my sight.

The last words sounded like a possible threat. But I knew Ms. Smith would be happy to finally find an adoptive family for me. Eh, not really happy FOR ME, rather because she hates me and wants to get rid of my presence as soon as possible.

“Amren! Your time has come!”

From behind me came Marcus. He hugged me tightly and I blushed. A smile came from my lips that I couldn't hide. Indeed, it was my chance and I was not going to kick it.
